Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I live at the end of a cul-de-sac and look directly down the street. Will this camera be able to read a license plate at about 120 feet, also will the night vision be sufficient at this distance. Does camera track people? Only one review on this camera makes it very hard to know exactly what this camera is capable of. Any additional information would be appreciated

A: It will depend on the speed of the vehicle. Very slow moving vehicles should capture the plate. However, please keep in mind that you will need to have the image zoomed in so that the license plate takes up the entire image.

Q: 2. What microphones work with this unit? Seems it's wired differently from current RCA microphones that are easy to find.

A: The Hikvision DS-2DE4A425IW-DE 4MP Outdoor PTZ Network Dome Camera with Night Vision (BH # HIE4A425IWDE) features one (1) audio input (line in), a maximum input amplitude of 2-2.4 vpp, and an input impedance of 1 KΩ ± 10%. A microphone like this may be connected: the SoundSecure SS-704 Outdoor Line-Level Omnidirectional Microphone, B&H # SOSS704 (https://bhpho.to/35KAxTe).

Q: 3. Can this camera be set at 1080 - 60 frames per second?

A: 30 fps is the highest shutter speed for video.

Q: 4. I don't see the LED's, are they in the black ring above the dome? If so, how well do they work?

A: I am sorry we are unable to make this comparison for you.

Q: 5. After I received my camera, I noticed that the mounting configuration doesn't seem very secure - the camera can be easily removed from the mounting plate with a twist. Is there a way to make this interface more secure?

A: You could drive screws through both the camera plate and the mounting plate to create a more secure installation.

Q: 6. Can camera be set to continously pan back and forth 180 degrees?

A: Yes. The Hikvision DS-2DE4A425IW-DE 4MP Outdoor PTZ Network Dome Camera with Night Vision BH #HIE4A425IWDE can be set for several patterns of panning: PTZ Functionality Endless panning -5 to 90° tilt range 0.1 to 300°/s pan speed, 350°/s preset speed 0.1 to 160°/s tilt speed, 200°/s preset speed 300 presets 8 patrols (up to 32 presets per patrol) 4 pattern scans (records time over 10 minutes for each scan) Support for proportional zoom, power-off memory, PTZ status display, and preset freezing Park action includes preset, pattern scan, patrol scan, auto scan, tilt scan, random scan, frame scan, and panorama scan Scheduled task includes preset, pattern scan, patrol scan, auto scan, tilt scan, random scan, frame scan, panorama scan, dome reboot, dome adjust, and aux output

Q: 7. Is it possible to record video to the SD card only when motion is detected?

A: No. This camera may be set to continuous recording mode.

Q: 8. When you switch the Main Stream to 1080p does it support 60fps like the older version of this camera does?

A: The specs from Hikvision show that the camera should support 1080 60fps. We do not have a way to test this with the camera though. However the Specifications show 1080 60fps is supported when using the Main stream. Main Stream 50 Hz: 25 fps (2560 × 1440, 1920 × 1080, 1280 × 960, 1280 × 720) 60 Hz: 30 fps (2560 × 1440, 1920 × 1080, 1280 × 960, 1280 × 720) Camera specs from Hikvision: https://bhpho.to/3W0CcQ2

Q: 9. What Hikvision NVRs support this camera?

A: Any of the current NVR's that support 4MP or higher will support this camera.

Q: 10. Is there a warranty and if so what would it be. And is dealt with b&h or hikvision?

A: This would come with a 3 year manufacturers warranty

Excellent camera. Great vehicle and license plate recognition, except if a Jeep Wrangler without roof is passing by. Doesn't pick it up for some reason. Make sure you pair it with another camera, so you can get full pictures 24/7 of what the ANPR camera snaps.

Great camera and works well at night. I researched this for days and this was exactly what I needed for this build. B&H had the best deal to boot!

This is a good camera. Image quality is excellent, and it catches ~ 90% of the license plates on cars that go by. It works well in darkness, but you must set it up properly to get it to do so.

The downside: these kinds of cameras, being so powerful, have a myriad of menus and setup options. The manual, while better than others I have used, is just ok. I wish the Chinese vendor would hire a US proofreader (a technical one) to review such documents. There are a number of areas where things are vague at best. For example, there is a slider bar to set sensitivity (0-100), but there is no mention of what the numbers mean (is 0 sensitive or is 100 sensitive)?

If you are not familiar with these cameras it will likely take some time to set it up and use it properly. The web interface is pretty good compared to some cameras I have used.

So far, this is the best camera I have used for license plate capture. You can download a list of all the plates it captures into an Excel file. You can also download images. My complaint here is that if there are 3000 images to download, you can only do them in batches of 100 each.

All in all, this is a good camera, well made, and I'd recommend it if you have a need to capture license plates.
