Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I'm theatre director in a school with a carpeted (throughout-including stage)lecture hall venue that we use as our theatre. Maximum size- 300 people. No curtains, fly space, wings, etc. Quality Sound has been tricky for years. Would this be appropriate for my situation?

A: We bought two of these for our church and they worked well. However, I not sure we are using them to there best ability. They did allow people to hear the drama btter. Hope that helps. And I believe you have a 30 day return policy with B&H.

Q: 2. Is this mic picking up footsteps on a theater stage?

A: This is designed for surface-mounted applications on conference tables, podiums, lecterns, etc...

Q: 3. I'm a little confused about their statement Self-contained electronics eliminate need for external power modules . It IS a condenser mic. I am assuming it still requires phantom power. Would the 12v phantom power from a typical shure mic mixer provide adequate performance?

A: It is a 48volt phantom powered mic. Whether or not it can work on 12 volts can be answered by reading the spec on the AT web site.

Q: 4. Will the power module fit into a xvive phantom power unit?

A: Yes, you can use the Audio-Technica Pro 35 Cardioid Condenser Instrument Microphone with the Xvive Audio P1 Portable Phantom Power Supply with Rechargeable Battery (B&H # XVP1). The Pro 35 is also compatible for use with the Xvive Audio U3C Set Wireless Plug-On System for Condenser Microphones - 2.4 GHz (B&H # XVU3CSET). The transmitter in this system will supply phantom power for the mic.

Q: 5. Does this mic use phantom power?

A: Yes, the Audio-Technica PRO 37 is a condenser microphone and requires phantom power (48v).

Q: 6. I'm looking for a microphone to capture dancer audio on a stage (steps, claps, tambourine, etc.). I'm also hoping to pick up the audience applause/cheering with the same microphone. I'm hoping I could tape this down on the edge of the stage to achieve that. Has anyone done this? What were your results? What kind of microphone would work better? Thanks!

A: This mic will work for you but be aware that the sound coming form the front of the mic will be much louder than from behind it since it is a cartioid microphone.

Q: 7. Is there a hanging XY mount for these mics?

A: No, I have not found one yet.

Q: 8. Does this mic come in a wireless version?

A: This mic is not available in a wireless version.

Q: 9. Is anyone using 2 of these simultaneously with the tascam dr-40 and if so, does the phantom power from the tascam do ok? How long can you record with a new set of batteries? Thanks

A: I do not own a Tascam dr-40, but we used 2 of these with phantom power from a Canon XA-10 and they worked well. It may be a decent alternative to a bunch of lav mics and a mixing board.

Q: 10. Using for interviews.I'm getting a lot of noise from this microphone that I wouldn't expect. Very sensitive to any movement near the microphone like a jacket moving, heavy breaths causes overmodulation. I use the windscreen at all times and that helps some. It's pretty annoying. I've used dozens of mics over the years and have never had this much problems. Am I doing something wrong?Any suggestions? Would a unidirectional mic be better.

A: The Audio-Technica AT831B is a unidirectional microphone, suitable for professional video, broadcast and sound reinforcement applications. The fact that it is a condenser makes it more sensitive than your traditional dynamic hand-held interview mic. In video production, condensers are preferred because of their sensitivity- especially when pristine audio is demanded. In your case, I would try a couple of things before considering a mic change. 1. Engage the low-cut filter. The power switch has three positions: off , flat , and low-cut . The low-cut filter makes the microphone less sensitive to low frequencies found in wind, breath noise, and general ambiance. 2. Consider adding the Rycote Undercover (B&H#RYUC) lavalier wind cover and adhesive mount to your sound bag. The covers help reduce rustling noise caused by cable movement and friction between the mic element and clothing.
