The 55mm ND Filter from Ice is a neutral density filter with a 64x filter factor that provides a 6-stop exposure reduction. Its 1.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed without overexposing your image. By slowing your exposure time, you can create motion blur for special effects or to convey a sense of movement. Opening your iris allows you to create shallow depth of field, which can help isolate your subject. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

This neutral density filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity. It features a slim, aluminum alloy filter ring that helps prevent vignetting while remaining durable and lightweight. This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. any noticeable loss of image quality (especially sharpness) with this ND filter? Thank you

A: I was just now looking at the same subject shot with and without my Bower 52mm variable ND. And I didn't see the filter adding any softness at all. I'll do some more testing but I just don't see a problem at this point. Seems like a great value for 25 bucks. I suspect people may be shooting wide open, getting suboptimal sharpness, and blaming the filter.

Q: 2. I have a Nikon 50mm f/1.4 lens with a good. The lens cap fits inside the lens and it says 58mm. Will this lens filter fit this lens?

A: Yes, any 58mm filter will fit.

Q: 3. Would this fit a Samyang 12 mm lens

A: Depends which Samyang 12mm lens it is. If it is Samyang 12mm f/2.0 NCS CS Lens for Fujifilm X-Mount then yes Ice CO Nano Multi-Coated 0.9 ND8 Filter (67mm, 3-Stop) is compatible.

Q: 4. Is the knob detachable?

A: Yes the knobs on the Hoya Variable Density II Filter are removable.

Q: 5. What's the weight of the filter Could it be used instead of the balancing ring needed for the X5S?(drone proposes).

A: The weight is not provided by the manufacturer and we do not have a way to weigh it. It would be best to contact the manufacturer to find out if they know that information; B+W/Schneider Optics can be reached at 800-645-7239.

Q: 6. Does it come with a case?

A: No sadly it is just a plastic display case.

Q: 7. does the canon lens cap the comes with a 77mm fit on this filter? the older Hoya I have I can not fit my canon lens cap on

A: No, like most variable ND filters, the lens cap that came with the lens will not fit on to the Hoya 77mm Variable Density II Filter.

Q: 8. I have a vivitar 0.43x wide angle filter that accepts 62mm filter threads. I'm considering getting this Bower 62mm Variable ND filter and a 58-62 step up ring so I can use it on both the wide angle filter and my Canon G40's lens. My question is; would there be any amount of vignetting that would render the use of the ND filter on the wide angle filter pointless? How much of a vignette should I expect?

A: I can confirm what Roland said, this filter becomes unusable at its maximum/darkest setting. Roll it back just a bit and it's fine, but do keep that in mind.

Q: 9. Want to use it to cut down ambient light and light the subject with monolight. How well does this work for portraits ?

A: The Ice CO Nano Multi-Coated 1.8 ND64 Filter (77mm, 6-Stop) will provide a 6-stop exposure reduction. You can use your lens aperture wide open under the bright daylight setting, while controlling highlights and shadows with monolights.

Q: 10. Would this filter cause a colour shift when combined with the Hoya UV and IR Cut filter?

A: The Hoya 72mm Variable Density II Filter is meant to be color neutral without any color shift. This should not cause a color shift even if used with the Hoya 72mm UV and IR Cut Filter. One thing to keep watch for is an X-pattern near the maximum density.
