Shoot at staggering distances with the 125x optical zoom COOLPIX P1000 Digital Camera from Nikon. This camera, which has a 16MP backside illuminated CMOS sensor, features a built-in NIKKOR lens with a 35mm equivalent focal length range of 24-3000mm. You can zoom even further with 250x Dynamic Fine digital zoom, which will give you an equivalent focal length of 6000mm. Coupled with these extreme focal lengths is Nikon's Dual Detect Optical Vibration Reduction, which provides 5 stops of optical image stabilization and ensures your telephoto shots are crisp.

Gracing the back of the camera are a 3.2" vari-angle, 921k-dot LCD monitor and an eye-level 2.36m-dot electronic viewfinder, so your subjects will always be easy to see. The camera is also capable of recording 4K UHD video at 30 or 25 fps and supports an external microphone via a 3.5mm connector.

Camera shake may be a concern while shooting at extreme focal lengths on a tripod. Or, you may need to otherwise remotely operate the P1000. The optional ML-L7 remote satisfies these needs with wireless operation off the camera's zoom, shutter, and other settings. Once you're done with a shoot, immediately access your photos on a paired smartphone via the Nikon SnapBridge app and the camera's built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

The backside-illuminated sensor with 16 million effective pixels can output detailed images at sensitivities between ISO 100 and 6400. It can also create 4K UHD movies at 30 or 25 fps.

An absurd 24-3000mm (35mm equivalent) focal range means few, if any, objects are out of the reach of your lens. Zoom is further enhanced by Dynamic Fine digital zoom, which makes the maximum focal length a ridiculous 6000mm. Dual Detect Optical Vibration Reduction provides 5 stops of optical image stabilization so your handheld shots are crisp.

The P1000 features a bright vari-angle 3.2" LCD display that makes composing and reviewing images and movies a breeze. Also available is the 0.39", 2.36 million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder for a more traditional shooting style.

A control ring at the front of the device can be used for a variety of functions, like adjusting focus, exposure, white balance, and ISO, all from the lens barrel. Also on the barrel is a zoom toggle and a dedicated Snapback button that will make your P1000 quickly zoom out in case you lose sight of your subject at long focal lengths. Releasing the button will return the focal length to its previous position.

Nikon's SnapBridge technology allows for seamless photo sharing directly from your camera to a paired smartphone device.

The P1000 features a slew of shooting modes that adjust settings for different scenarios like sunsets, fireworks, and portraits. The popular Moon Mode is great for shooting Earth's closest neighbor and the new Bird Mode optimizes the camera for capturing the often bright and colorful creatures.

The ML-L7 remote (not included) can wirelessly adjust a variety of setting such as ISO, zoom, and aperture, in addition to triggering the shutter of the P1000. This lets you maintain precise composition while shooting from a tripod.

The EN-EL20a battery is rated for 250 shots per charge. Recharging takes only approximately 3 hours.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I would like to buy Wide Angle, Macro Lens & Telephoto lens (zoom lens) for for Nikon P1000, can you please recommend me the best one?

A: When using the Nikon COOLPIX P1000 Digital Camera, one cannot mount any interchangeble lenses onto the camera. One could mount wide angle and telephoto adapter lenses if they would fit on the 77mm lens mount of the P1000, but the quality of the images would be distorted.

Q: 2. Can we tether this camera for shooting via computer, like we can the DSLRs?

A: Sorry, we are not finding any tethering options for this camera at this time.

Q: 3. Does it take slow motion video?

A: No, the Nikon COOLPIX P1000 Digital Camera does not have a high frame rate video option for slow-motion video recording capability.

Q: 4. this should do well for landscape photos...moon shots..but what about Christmas lights and fireworks? tracking aircraft like at an airshow?

A: The new Nikon DF-M1 Dot Sight may be the answer for these types of shots

Q: 5. Does this camera have a form of Log?

A: The Nikon COOLPIX P1000 Digital Camera does not have the capability to record in Log.

Q: 6. Optical zoom distance

A: This camera has a 125x Optical Zoom. It is the 35mm Equivalent Focal Length of a 24 to 3000mm lens.

Q: 7. Is it made in Japan or China or Thailand...?

A: This camera is made in Thailand.

Q: 8. I own a P900 & noticed that the P1000 will not have GPS, which I find useful. It also weighs over a pound more than the P900?

A: Vs the P900, the P1000 has:4K, RAW, Bluetooth, Mic Jack, is 3 years newer and has a much longer telephoto. (the big selling point)Apparently, Nikon feels that it gave things people wanted and took away GPS in exchange. I think GPS should have stayed as well.

Q: 9. I see a lot of emphasis on the zoom quality but I am also wanting something ideal for taking good family photos or close up images as well?

A: The P1000 is a perfectly good all round camera for everything from family photos, close ups (it focuses to 1 cm from the objective lens) and of course super zoom. To be able to have all of this in one camera is fabulous! No swapping lenses or having to carry around or invest in a lot of different lenses is a great plus factor. It means you always have the focal length lens you need for whatever comes up at a moments notice and I have found that to be a huge positive feature.

Q: 10. Where is Coolpix P1000 made?

A: I believe the Nikon factory making the P1000 is now in Thailand instead of China.

The zoom and quality of this camera is amazing. This was taken without a tripod and at full zoom.

FIRST: A MUST! Turn the NR (Noise Reduction) to LOW. You will be much happier with the sharpness of your photos. Somehow the NR affects the photos more than with the P900. I wish the menu allowed us to turn it off completely. Noise reduction should be done in post-processing and before you do any more with the photo. Also, with full or near full zoom, make sure your shutter speed is high. When I use my elbows as a tripod, I still see much better sharpness with 1/200 shutter speed or above. ISO 200 works great. More with a later review.

I had a P900 and could hardly wait for the P1000 to come out. Only been shooting a few days with it but very pleased thus far. It's a good bit heavier than the P900 so that's taking getting use to since I am more elderly and don't have the strength I once had. If one shoots hand held, they have to expect a few losses due to non focused photos but once you get use to holding it still or using a tripod, it's fantastic. I ordered a battery charger since I prefer to charge outside the camera and the battery appears to drain fast. . . Overall - I love it!

Wow, this camera is amazing ! I have the Sony RX10 III that is a great superzoom camera but the P1000 beats the heck out of it over 600mm eqiv. The RX10 III has a 2x Clear Zoom feature but the IS does not work well over 600mm (220mm) eqiv. The P1000 IS works great at 2400mm eqiv. that is double the RX10 III max with Clear Zoom. Even 3000mm is great handheld. Here are two P1000 shots handheld at 2400mm eqiv.

I got some great shots 9.2 miles away in Albuquerque. I also got some nice close ups, a video of a busy street and other shots 1 mile away. I am impressed. You have to have a very sturdy tripod and a remote for long shots. I really like this camera and I would recommend it even before testing the bird and moon modes which I will do soon. Wow! This camera is nicer than I thought it was going to be and has way more functions than I thought I would have ever needed. I'm honestly impressed! The photo quality is very nice. I don't like the SnapBridge app though. The Wi-Fi connection is very hard to establish, at least with Android it is. Got it to work once, but not since then. Bluetooth connects flawlessly. Guess I'll just wait for the bluetooth remote. But yeah, this camera is all that and more. This thing got stupid zoom, lol.

As a hobbyist photographer with a Nikon D500, 850, and 300mm and 600mm prime lenses, I needed something to take on family trips where barbules on every bird feather were not that important. I expected the P1000 to fit that bill and, so far, it has exceeded expectations. The focus is fast, the 24-3000mm lens is super convenient, it can be set on manual and RAW. Compared to the body/lens combo usually used for birds and wildlife, this is relatively LIGHT. I have enclosed pictures of a landscape and a distant GBH. No question, not the same quality as body and lens combos costing more than 13x, but close and perfect for trips, family events, and times I want to be more of a participant than a shlepping photographer!
