This black Shure MX393/S Microflex is a supercardioid boundary microphone designed to capture high-quality speech and voice for sound-reinforcement and teleconferencing installations in governmental, institutional, religious, and business settings.
The MX393/S can be permanently installed on conference tables, desks, or lecterns. Its sleek, low-profile design is ideal for conference rooms and other sites where minimal mic visibility is of high priority and aesthetics are important.
The microphone features a supercardioid polar pattern best used for a single person. The mic takes advantage of the boundary effect to capture clear speech with reduced room ambience for intelligibility. The interchangeable capsule design provides the installer with greater flexibility and makes it possible to easily reconfigure microphone coverage as the need arises.
The MX393/S is equipped with a programmable, silent membrane switch with a bicolor LED that indicates the status of the mic.
The mic resists interference from devices such as cell phones and two-way communication devices. It requires 11 to 52V phantom power to operate. Included is an easy-to-use paint mask for custom-color installations.

Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. I'm trying to understand what it means to provide phantom power is for the shure 391o microphone?
A: Condenser mics such as the MX391/O require voltage in order to function. Phantom Power is the voltage required and is sent to the mic through the XLR cable from the whatever source you are connected to be it a mixer of preamp.
Q: 2. does this have a mute switch?
A: It does not. It is intended to be controlled externally.
Q: 3. According to SHURE's website, the Microflex Series come with 3 interchangeable cartridges. I don't see that in the IN THE BOX section. Does it in fact come with 3 cartridges?
A: No, the Shure MX393/S does not come with interchangeable cartridges. The MX393/S comes only with the supercardioid cartridge built into the unit.
Q: 4. Would one mic cover a 6 to 8 foot wide area with 2 to 6 people sitting at a witness table? Will be mixed with 9 other board member goose neck mics, the distance between the dias and the witness table is typically ten to 15 feet giver or take.
A: The abilities of the Shure MX391 Microflex Cardioid Boundary Microphone will likely be stretched when tasked with picking up voice from 6 to 8 feet, especially if some in this scenario are quiet speakers. For the best results in this specific situation, two MX391 would be ideal.
Q: 5. Will this mic survive water being splashed on it?
A: Shure does not rate the MX395 Microflex Low-Profile Boundary Microphone models for water resistance. This will probably withstand one or two accidents or water spills, but I would not recommend installing it in an environment where that will happen frequently. If the microphone does get wet, it would be best to wipe it dry as soon as possible. Repeated exposure to spills or splashes will damage the microphone. For conference rooms where water spills are more likely, using a hanging mic like this suspended over the table could be less likely to suffer damage from accidents: https://bhpho.to/2xVQp7s
Q: 6. For a city council meeting, where the members are facing an audience, I would assume a cardio pick-up pattern is better, as then it wouldn't pick-up as much sound from the audience?
A: That is correct. The omnidirectional version is good for round-table discussions.
Q: 7. How do regulate volume of mic?
A: Volume/Gain is controlled via the mixer or amplifier that the microphone is connected to.
Q: 8. What is the thread on the outside of this microphone? I'm working to create a custom mount for a pair of them and would like to find suitable hardware to mount them.
A: Shure lists the thread size as 7/8"-14 UNF-2B. All relevant installation dimensions for the MX395 are provided by Shure here: http://service.shure.com/s/article/mx395-installation-dimensions?language=en_US You can find additional information in the user manual which also includes a diagram showing all measurements of the mic on page 11 (use the page numbers printed on the pages, not the pdf page numbers): http://www.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/89562.pdf
Q: 9. Is there a white version?
A: We do not offer a white version of this boundary microphone.
Q: 10. Is the cartridge itself interchangeable - even if not included in the box?
A: Yes, MX393/S has an interchangeable capsule. The R183 is the replacement omnidirectional capsule, R184- Supercardioid, and R185 would be the cardioid replacement capsule.
