Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this keyboard work with the Korg midi software?

A: In MIDI Mode, this keyboard should work with any MIDI software.

Q: 2. Does this unit have the transpose feature?

A: Yes, the Roland RD-88 does have the transpose feature with a dedicated button to turn it on and off.

Q: 3. Is it portable?

A: Yes, the Korg D1 can be used as a portable digital piano. It is considered lightweight.

Q: 4. What is the layering capability of the RD-88? How many sounds can be layered at any one time?

A: The Roland RD-88 Digital Stage Piano features three Internal zones (Upper 1, Upper 2, and Lower), and one tone can be assigned to each of these zones. You can perform using combinations of tones by turning each zone on or off. You can also have multiple tones layered together at the same time, and even have different tones played in the left and right parts of the keyboard. The keyboard's Dual Mode lets the user play Upper 1 and Upper 2 tones layered across the entire keyboard.

Q: 5. Yes. That's what split and layer means. My question was whether or not it would layer and split at the same time. Please read this example: Bass on bottom and LAYERING piano and strings in the top?

A: The Layer Mode and the Split Mode on the Alesis Prestige 88-Key Digital Piano function separately and not simultaneously. On the model up, which is the Alesis Prestige Artist 88-Key Digital Piano (B&H # ALPRESTIGEAR), the Layer Mode and the Split Mode can be used at the same time. However, the manual notes that when you are using the Split Mode and the Layer Mode at the same time, the right-hand zone of the split will play both of the layered voices, and the left-hand zone of the split will play the split voice only. I am not certain whether the Prestige Artist model might provide the configuration that you desire, but it will allow you to use both the Layer Mode and the Split Mode simultaneously.

Q: 6. Can you layer and split, such as bass on the bottom and piano with a string pad on top?

A: Yes, the Alesis Prestige 88-Key Digital Piano has both Layer and Split Modes. Split Mode enables you to split the 88 keys into two zones so that you can use two different voices. Layer Mode enables two different voices to be layered together for a fuller and richer sound.

Q: 7. Deciding between the Recital and the concert models. is the key feel very different? hammer vs semiweighted adustable feel

A: Yes, there is a difference in the feel of the hammer action and semi-weighted keys on the Alesis Recital Pro and Concert 88-Key Digital Pianos. Hammer action keys can also be referred to as "fully-weighted" and the keys are heavier and can be harder to press down than semi-weighted keys which are lighter and very easy to press. Hammer action keyboards are often favored by players who have experience playing a traditional acoustic piano as this type of keyboard requires more strength and finger dexterity. There are also players who prefer the ease of semi-weighted keys. The sound of the piano can be the same whether the keyboard has hammer action or semi-weighted keys. Keyboards with semi-weighted keys are typically lighter, less expensive, and more portable. This is also true for the Alesis Recital Pro and Concert 88-Key Digital Pianos. There is a considerable difference in the weight of the two models. The Recital Pro weighs 26 pounds while the Concert model weighs 15.6 pounds.

Q: 8. Does it have a music rack/stand?

A: No it does not.

Q: 9. Can you record from it to a computer via the usb port? What are your options for recording from it?

A: Yes. By using a MIDI cable to connect devices that have MIDI connectors, you can create an ensemble in which a single MIDI keyboard can play multiple instruments, or change settings automatically as the song progresses. MIDI OUT connector MIDI messages are transmitted from these connectors to external MIDI devices. The RD-88’s MIDI OUT connectors are used for sending the performance data of the controller section 1 x USB Type-B (Computer Transfer, MIDI)

Q: 10. Are the keys weighted?

A: The Keys one the Recital Pro 88 are full weighted hammer graded action keys.

I can only think of one word to describe my all experience with the Roland RD-2000: Delicious.

Maybe also, I only have a single warning for anyone interested in buying that wonderful digital stage piano:
Do not believe and do not trust any comparison video and even supposed promotion of the RD-2000 on YouTube, with sound intentionally or not, horribly modified by equalizers or altered by poor quality amplifiers to disqualify the RD-2000 against the competition. Nothing to do with the reality, beauty, sophisticated, powerful and wonderful sounding of the RD-2000's sound engine both on stage and in the studio.
I have owned and spent tens of thousands of dollars each year on the latest of all the most expensive premium range digital pianos from the brands Yamaha, Nord, Kawai, Kurzweil, Dexibell, Korg and lastly the RD-2000 which was my latest and cheapest purchase and the best sounding by far, comparing it to all my previous models.
Better believe an end user like me, without any need to benefit a particular brand cheating, and who is only interested in the truth with the supporting facts in the hands.

This is not a technical review - you can read technical reviews by just using YouTube.

I purchased this because I wanted a keyboard that was more focused on piano sound reproduction than synthesizer options. I am not disappointed.

There are enough variations with the available piano sounds to keep any person happy. In addition, there are options to layer different instruments (pads, strings, electric piano, etc.). The capabilities of this keyboard are more than I need at this time, but I am very pleased with the sound reproduction and options available.

I played keyboard for my church and wish I could bring this on stage with me, but I currently play on the Yamaha MX88 at church.

Much more capabilities than I will probably ever use, but if you are looking for a top-notch performer for a stage piano, this doesn't disappoint. I purchased it because it finally went on sale.

It is a professional level stage piano and is right up there with the Yamaha YC-88 and Nord series.
