Add five additional drive bays to your Synology DiskStation DS1817+ and DS1517+. Supporting 2.5" SATA hard drives and SSDs, as well as 3.5" SATA hard drives, the DX517 is a flexible solution supporting on-the-fly volume expansion or serving as a local backup destination.

Managed from DiskStation Manager on the host NAS, the additional bays in the DX517 are immediately ready to be used once connected. On-the-fly volume expansion helps ensure that storage and services on the host are not interrupted during volume expansion.

The hot-swappable drive trays of DX517 allow drive installation and replacement without powering down the system. A screwless drive tray design also helps reduce the time needed for system setup.

Synology's DX517 can be used as a dedicated local backup solution for the Synology DiskStation DS1817+ or DS1517+. When created as a separate volume, the DX517 provides a great backup solution to its local hard disks in case of system failure.

Q: 2. Does the DX517 work with DS415+?

A: Yes, this is compatible with the DS415+.

Q: 3. Does this work with the DS 1513+?

A: Yes, this would be compatible.

Q: 4. Am I right in thinking this would be perfect for a 4k video editing workflow? I'm looking at purchasing the 128TB version over 8 bays

A: Yes, the Synology 128TB DiskStation DS1821+ 8-Bay NAS Enclosure Kit with Seagate NAS Drives is very well suited for a video editing workflow.

Q: 5. What RJ45 10Gb Ethernet adapter would work in this? I only see SFP+ from Synology.

A: You could use B&H # SYE10G18T1 with the Synology 128TB DiskStation DS1821+ 8-Bay NAS Enclosure Kit with Seagate NAS Drives (8 x 16TB) BH #SYDS1821128P.

Q: 6. To connect this to a MBP M1 Max, and use it for video editing, what other components do i need?

A: The Synology DiskStation DS1821+ is a NAS, or Network Attached Storage device, so it would need to be connected to your router or network switch with an Ethernet cable. You would then access your storage from a computer or other device via the local network.

Q: 7. Is this compatible with the DS1821+?

A: Yes it is and it supports creating volumes across different units.

Q: 8. Can this be used as a regular old RAID drive rather than a NAS? or is there a better solution for a large RAID drive?

A: The Synology 48TB DiskStation DS1821+ 8-Bay NAS Enclosure Kit with Seagate NAS Drives (8 x 6TB) can be used as a local raid, but it's limited to USB 3.1 Gen 1 speeds as the enclosure is primarily intended as a NAS. For a local RAID, I'd recommend the SanDisk Professional 48TB G-RAID Shuttle 8 8-Bay RAID Array (8 x 6TB, Thunderbolt 3 & USB 3.2 Gen 2) (B&H # SAGRS848TB).

Q: 9. How long is the included communication cable? Is it a standard cable which I could replace with a longer length for flexibility

A: We don't have a spec on the length of the cable included with the Synology DX517 unfortunately, but it is an eSATA cable which can be purchased separately (such as BH #STESATA6).

Q: 10. Does the expansions need to have all there bays filled with drives or at least three drives be a good starting point to start?

A: You can choose to use as many or few of the Synology DX517 5-Bay Expansion Enclosure's drive bays as you would like to when adding the enclosure to an existing NAS setup.
