Updating a classic for today's imaging standards, the Nokton 50mm f/1.2 Aspherical from Voigtlander is a fast normal-length lens for M-mount rangefinder cameras. Distinguished by its bright f/1.2 maximum aperture, this lens excels in low-light conditions and also offers enhanced control over depth of field. The advanced optical design incorporates a pair of aspherical elements and one partial dispersion elements, which, together, help to suppress both spherical and chromatic aberrations for greater sharpness, clarity, and color rendering. Additionally, its manual focus design permits working with subjects as close as 2.3' away, and the 12-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Fast f/1.2 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also enables greater control over focus position for selective focus applications.

Two aspherical elements are incorporated at the front and the rear of the eight elements, six groups construction, and helps to limit spherical aberrations and distortions for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.

One partial dispersion element is featured in the optical design, and helps to minimize color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to achieve higher clarity and color fidelity.

Manual focus design enables a minimum focusing distance of 2.3', and a rangefinder cam enables coupled focusing with M-mount rangefinder cameras.

A 12-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out-of-focus quality when working with shallow depth of field techniques.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this work with Sony's Focus Map feature?

A: Unfortunately no, focus mapping is not available when using a lens that does not support phase detection AF.

Q: 2. Can it be used on Leica M5 body?

A: Yes, it will work on the M5.

Q: 3. does it support focus mapping on sony a7IIII?

A: Yes, you can use the Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.2 Aspherical SE Lens for Sony E on the A7 IV with the focus mapping feature.

Q: 4. is the hood reversible for storage?

A: This lens has a screw-in lens hood which will not fit in reverse on the lens when storing it.

Q: 5. Will it work with Nikon D500 body?

A: No, only Leica M series cameras.

Q: 6. Is this a preset lens? Do I have to stop down prior to taking the exposure or does it stop down automatically?

A: This is a fully manual lens. So you will have to change the aperture your self. The electric contact points, transfer all Exif data between the camera and lens to permit full use of camera functions. Including focus magnification, image stabilization, and lens corrections.

Q: 7. can anyone compare this to the Zeiss Zm Planar f2 lens? I'm looking at both for my Voigtlander R3m 35mm rangefinder

A: The 50 f1/2 would be the overall better lens, however the f/2 would be a much more economical alternative.

Q: 8. Will this lens work on the a6000?

A: Yes, this is mountable on the A6000. Due to the A6000's APS-C sensor, it would be approximately a 75mm equivalent field of view.

Q: 9. What is the difference between this lens and the voigtlander 50mm 1.2 SE?

A: On the Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.2 Aspherical Lens for Sony E, SE stands for “Still Edition”. The lens is designed for still photographers. The reason for this is the lens has clickable apertures.

Q: 10. It says it has a 0.833 magnification, what would qualify this as MACRO. Please confirm.

A: The focusing distance on this lens would be 1.48' so it would not qualify as a macro lens, which would normally have an even shorter focusing distance.

I had my heart set on a Cron 2.0, but I read the reviews and they were spot on.
This is amazingly sharp, bokeh is beautiful, and the color is neutral. At 1.2 it vignettes in a beautiful manner, by 2.0, it's crystal sharp. Note at 1.2 it does purple fringe in high contrast areas when sun is out...not as bad as the older 1.1 version, but it's noticeable.

Using it on my Leica M10 Monochrom and it delivers brilliant results even And especially wide open. Build quality is first rate. Wish it came with a lens hood instead of that being a 110 dollar extra. Ended up purchasing a 52mm Sensei Pro for under 10 bucks and a 58mm snap on cover for under 5 bucks: Perfect solution. Need to use a filter? Add one between lens and hood. Use the hood to rotate a polarizer...
The focus ring is as smooth as they come. Throw is perfect.
Price performance is hard to beat, seriously!!

Ive been looking for a 50mm wide aperture lens for my Leica bodies.  I had settled on a used Summilux 50mm but when Voigtlander announced their new 50mm f1.2 ASPH I decided to research that lens.  Reviews were very good and the performance wide open was excellent.  At f1.2 its a half stop faster than the Summilux at half the price of a used one.  After using it for a month I find the lens outstanding.  I mostly use Leica glass but this lens stays on a Leica body always.  Very sharp, minimal vignetting wide open (use the f 1.2 Noctilux profile), no barrel distortion, and have not detected any color fringing so far. Beautiful Bokeh with a pleasing background.  I cant say enough good things about this fantastic lens.

Hands down one of the best 50mm lenses I have owned. After several weeks shooting it, I can say it is truly an amazing lens. Fit and finish is excellent and the rendering is fantastic. My only knock, it should come with a hood, but oh well, I will plunk down another $100 and complete the package.

Usually any lens faster than f/1.4 is considered a “super speed” lens.  Super speed lenses are known for being difficult to use, finicky, bulky, heavy, and not necessarily being all that sharp.  They also are known for being more susceptible to flare than their less exotic f/1.4 and f/2 cousins, not to mention extremely expensive.

This Voigtlander is a super speed lens that suffers from none of those usual downsides.  It is fairly compact, not excessively heavy, but most unexpectedly it is very well-behaved in almost all situations.

The lens is very resistant to flare.  It has very low distortion, is very sharp, does not suffer from focus shift and generally is just as easy to use as a less exotic lens.

For those expecting a budget Noctilux, this isn’t it.  Actually it has a look very much like the Leica Summilux ASPH, which is a very good thing, and then it can open up an additional half stop.  It isn’t quite as well corrected as the Summilux (that lens is apochromatic and this one isn’t), but it is very, very close, not to mention it has the exact same weight.

I’ve had this for about two weeks now and so far am very impressed.

This lens is a rare steal. Stunning image quality, sharp wide open, creamy bokeh, and solid but compact build on my M10. It’s everything a Leica or rangefinder lens should be, at a fraction of the cost. And it’s a true joy to shoot with. It’s the lens I most frequently have mounted. Highly recommended!

Great lens, softer wide open, but sharp and nice edge to edge sharpness when you stop down. It's a but heavier that the Summilux, but a very good plan b option.

This is a great sharp lens, I use it on the Leica M10-P and M10-Monochrom cameras. The price is right on target and rivals the more expensive lenses.

Smooth color and shade gradients. Beautiful bokeh. Sharp, but not harsh. Well built. Nice portrait lens.

Great lens at a fair price. Outstanding Japanese optics for a fraction of what a Leica will cost you. This 50mm is a smart choice for Leica rangefinder cameras. It's sharp and it pairs well with the M10's 24-megapixel sensor. My rangefinder calibration was spot-on with this Voigtlander.
