A compact, well-versed prime, the NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S from Nikon offers a normal-length field of view along with a bright f/1.8 maximum aperture. The comfortable perspective pairs with the f/1.8 design to suit working in difficult lighting conditions as well as offers increased control over depth of field. The optical design includes two aspherical elements and two extra-low dispersion elements, which greatly reduce both spherical and chromatic aberrations for increased sharpness and clarity. Both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings are used, too, to suppress flare and ghosting for greater color fidelity and higher contrast.

In terms of handling, a stepping motor provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override to suit both stills and video applications. Additionally, a programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings.

Prime normal-length lens is designed for FX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras.

Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field for isolating subjects and working with selective focus.

Two aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.

Two extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color rendering.

A Nano Crystal Coat, along with a Super Integrated Coating, has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.

Stepping motor delivers impressively smooth, quiet, and fast autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.

Programmable control ring can be used to intuitively adjust a variety of camera and exposure settings.

Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.

The "normal" lens that is way above normal.

This focal length is covered by my zoom lens, but this is in a league of its own. Brighter in focusing, and wonderful DoF.

It's also superior to the DSLR af 50s.

Really like the quality and speed of the S lenses, especially this 50 1.8. Great all around lens, light, fast to focus and excellent rendering.

I recently got a Nikon Z6ii and matched it up with this 50mm F1.8 lens. I really can't believe how sharp this combination is, but beyond that, the quality of the images is surreal. I've only had it for a few weeks, but I've been taking various images testing out both camera and lens. I previously had a Nikon D500 and F mount lenses, and there is just no comparison.

The images I have gotten so far almost look 3 dimensional. Attached are a few images I've gotten. All are just available light photos mainly taken at a wide open aperature to test the bokeh of the lens. I'm loving it so far.

Have only used this lens once with a Z7ii. Really like the feel of the lens on the camera. I will up date this review once I can get out and really give it a work out.

This is my first z lens for my z8. I previously used my f mount lenses which I thought were very good. This lens is tack sharp and with the resolution and autofocus accuracy of the Z8 images I’ve taken have blown my mind and those of my friends. They all want a Z8 with this lens now. I may have some explaining to do to their wives.

I bought this lens in 2019 but put it aside after buying a few zooms as I'm often shooting while traveling and a zoom is convenient. I returned to it recently after reading a review that raved about its performance and have fallen in love with it again. You really can't beat a fast prime for show-stopping photos and I'm a sucker for bokeh which this lens has in spades. It's a low-light, bokeh, super sharp, multi-purpose-angle-of-view monster and I love it.

Some folks commented that it's too big/heavy/expensive for a 50mm but, for the performance I think it's worth it. (If that's how you feel though, I'd point you towards the newish 40mm f/2 which I also have and love; it's a fraction of the size/weight/price and has surprisingly great performance.)

Some photos for reference: puppy portrait - depth of field is only on her eyes at f/1.8; night cathedral - starbursts at f/11; model train - round twinkle light bokeh at f/3.2; butterfly - subject isolation at f/1.8; sunset - low-light hand-held at f/4; building - razer sharp at f/8.

The Z 50mm f/1.8 is a fantastic lens. The contrast and color are compelling and the bokeh is pleasing. But the thing that really seals the deal is the sharpness. This is one fantastically sharp lens. I use it on my Z7II or Z50 quite often. On the Z50 it makes those 20.9 megapixels look like 30! I have included a few images for your review! My photo of the Central Valley farmland is a three-shot panorama using the Z 50mm held vertically and effortlessly stitched together in Photoshop.
