$468.00 $673.92

The non-rotating Tiffen Series 9 85B Linear Polarizer Filter combines both an 85B color conversion filter with a linear polarizing filter to blend the effects of both filter types into a single, convenient solution.

The 85B color conversion aspect of the filter provides a warming effect and decreases the color temperature from 5500K to 3200K, allowing the use of tungsten balanced film in daylight conditions.

The linear polarizing aspect of the filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. This results in a noticeable increase in the saturation of skies and foliage, as well as clearer imagery when photographing in hazy conditions. A linear polarizer differs from a circular polarizer in that it does not supports use of a camera's autofocus or auto exposure functions; it is best suited for use with manual cameras, such as view cameras, that are not dependent on internal mechanisms to determine focus or metering settings.

There is a total filter factor of about 6x, requiring an increase of 2.6 stops for normal exposure. Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings. The non-rotating design of this filter is best-suited for use with lens hoods, adapters, or other rings for rotational control over the polarizing substrate. It is compatible with Series 9 filter holders.

Linear polarizer and 85B amber color conversion filter combination.

Total filter factor of approximately 6x requires 2.6 stops of additional exposure for normal results.

Warming 85B color conversion filter decreases color temperature from 5500K to 3200K for using tungsten-balanced film in daylight conditions.

Polarizer helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface.

Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.

Strongest polarizing effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun.

Non-rotating design is best-suited to use with lens hoods or adapter rings in order to best control the polarizing effect of the filter.

Q: 1. What is the difference between Ultra Pol Circular vs Ultra pol LINEAR? Which one will work best in my matte Shape-2 4x4 case and with my Sony A7SII?

A: If you are also using a variable ND on your camera and want to use a polariser as well, you definitely need a circular one as a linear polariser will cause a colour shift as you rotate it.

Q: 2. Why isn't it available in 46mm filter size? That's the size most of my Micro Four Thirds lenses are.

A: Charles... this filter is available, but B&H does not list it on their website as it is considered Special Order . Please call B&H directly and tell them you would like to request they special order item # 46WPOL from Tiffen. I currently show a few of these in stock and they can be dropped shipped directly from Tiffen to you when ordered through B&H.

Q: 3. Will a linear polarizer affect the AF system of my Sony a7iii?

A: We recommend a Circular Polarizing filter for autofocus cameras

Q: 4. What is the difference between Ultra Pol Circular vs Ultra pol LINEAR? Which one will work best in my matte Shape-2 4x4 case and with my Sony A7SII?

A: Circular Polarizers are designed for use with auto or manual focus lenses, while linear polarizers are best used with manual focus lenses.

Q: 5. Does this come with a case?

A: Yes, Tiffen 49mm 85B Color Conversion Filter comes on an acrylic case.

Q: 6. What is the differences between this model and http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/398871-REG/Schneider_68013038_138_mm_True_Linear_Polarizing.htmlIt seems like its just different descriptions but the same product. The only noticeable difference is a 10 year warranty on the more expensive model. What exactly does this cover? Does it cover it breaking?

A: Basically, there are two types of Polarizing filters; Linear and Circular. Linear are used for manual focusing as they can confuse AF sensors. Circular filters are designed for AF lenses and cameras but can be used on manual focus cameras as well. For more details on the two, please see: http://bhpho.to/MF21zoThe Schneider 138mm True-Linear Polarizing Glass filter is optimized for motion picture and television cameras. Having an extinction ratio of ER 374, the Schneider True-Pol is 12-times more effective than other polarizing filters. The 138mm Circular Ultra Polarizing Filter from Tiffen is a similar filter yielding a more intense look to your images and is designed for AF cameras. Because of manufacturing differences, circular polarizing filters cost more than comparable linear filters. Both filters come with ten year warranties that cover manufacturing or workmanship defects.

Q: 7. Whats the difference between linear and circular polarizers? Im using a matte box with a rotatable 4x4 filter tray. Thanks.

A: Both a linear polarizer and circular polarizer will give you similar results although a circular polarizer should be used on cameras with beam splitting metering systems commonly found on auto focus SLR's/DSLR's.

Q: 8. What range of sizes can this filter fit?

A: This is a 77mm filter. It will fit any lens with a 77mm filter thread on the front of the lens. Tiffen does make this and many other filters in other sizes as well. Just do a search at B&G for Tiffen Filter . You'll see many types of filters in many sizes. I srongly recommend Tiffen filters -- the price is reasonable, yet the quality is very high.

Q: 9. Was this made for film or digital? Do you have to angle it slightly for digital?

A: The Tiffen 4 x 5.65" Ultra Pol Linear Polarizer Filter, being a linear polarizer, is not good for digital photography. For digital photography, you would want to use a circular polarizing filter. Here is a link to the circular polarizing filter options in the 4 x 5.65" size: https://bhpho.to/4dOpbz9.

Q: 10. Will this work with the Wooden Camera Zip Box Pro 4.5in Round Filter Stage?

A: Hi, this filter is compatible. with the Wooden Camera Zip Box Pro 4.5in Round Filter Stage.

I do a lot of documentation of flat artwork using a traditional cross polarized light setup. In my experience circular polarizers don't work well in that setup. I recently switched from a 5DSR to an R5... and switched from using an EF 180mm macro to using an RF 70-200 f4. Those lenses use different filter sizes so I had to switch filters. I found one of the appropriate size in my filter drawer and began shooing. The resulting photos weren't bad... I didn't immediately realize the problem, but the results weren't as good as what I was expecting. A little methodical testing quickly told showed that the filter I had found was at fault. I quickly ordered this 77mm Tiffen version from B&H. Image quality was back to my expectations again! Life is good!

For what its worth... the linear polarizer that I had been using successfully for years was also a Tiffen. The faulty one was not.
