A: Manufacturing specifications change over time, you may have gotten filters from two different production batches. The current production specification is 7.5mm thick. As you also contacted Tiffen directly by email with photos we do not believe your filters to be fake.

Does the B+W Polarizer simply replaces this filter and acts as a UV Protector -or- can you mount on top of the Tiffen filter. Any benefits of doing this. It seems that if one were to do this there would be issues with.......?

A: The Tiffen serves as your protection for all general purposes. As much as the Kaesemann filter costs, I personally would put the Tiffen on the outside to protect it, or just leave the Tiffen off when using the polarizer for the optimal results. I would not recommend leaving the Circular Polarizer on for all occasions as it causes 2-stops of light loss (which is not usefull for most indoor/low light situations) and is mostly only useful in outdoor situations.

Q: 7. Will this fit a Sony Pl lens? specifically for the 35, 50, 85mm PL lens for the Sony PMW-F3. I have researched and hand measured and am still unsure which size is appropriate. any help is greatly appreciated!

A: The Sony Cine-Alta lenses do have a filter mounting screw. It is M 95mm, pitch 1.0 mm. (One note: this excludes the 20mm lens.) In other words, they take a 95mm filter and this 86mm will not fit them.

A: Circular Polarizer are designed for autofocus cameras. Most lenses cannot autofocus with a linear polarizer. If you want to use an autofocus lens you should choose a circular polarizer.

Q: 10. i need to buy a 77mm uv filter for a Tokina 11-16mm pro dx-II lens can I use a regular 77mm uv filter or do I need to buy the wide angle thin one for the wide angle lens. I know there a big difference in the prices. which one do I need to buy?

A: One doesn't need UV protection for a digital sensor. A good clear filter works well. (Nikon, B&W, e.g.)
