Distinguished by its speed, the RF 50mm f/1.2 L USM from Canon is a desirable normal-length prime due to its versatile focal length and bright f/1.2 maximum aperture. This fast design excels in difficult lighting conditions and also benefits working with shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques. The optical layout incorporates one UD element and one aspherical element, which help to reduce both chromatic and spherical aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and sharpness. A rounded 10-blade diaphragm also benefits bokeh quality to suit isolating subjects with depth of field. Complementing the imaging capabilities is an apt ring-type Ultrasonic Motor, which delivers fast, near-silent autofocus and full-time manual focus override. Additionally, a unique Control Ring is integrated into the lens design for intuitive control over exposure settings from the lens itself.

Normal-length prime is designed for full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless digital cameras.

Exceptionally bright f/1.2 maximum aperture affords extensive control over depth of field for selective focus applications and also benefits working in low-light situations.

One UD (Ultra-Low Dispersion) element is featured, and helps to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing in order to provide greater clarity and color accuracy.

An aspherical element is used to correct spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.

Ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with optimized focusing algorithms and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.

Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.

As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens has a weather-resistant design that protects against dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions.

Rounded 10-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

I wouldn't go hiking with this lens, as it is big and heavy. But the optics are flawless and the AF almost instantaneous. I bought it mainly for portraits and similar applications.

I have the RF 70-200, the RF 15-35...this lens might be better than both. I went out the other night and shot without a tripod, 1.2 and while most of the image was softer, the focus is SHARP. Beautiful bokeh, and sharp. Can't say enough good things about this lens. It's heavy, but about the same as the 15-35

Very sharp all around prime lens with that wide and fast 1.2 aperture. Ideal for portraits and for every day subjects. Very nice bokeh.

This is THE sharpest and most versatile 50mm lens I ever owned. To me, it is worth every dollar as I use it for my portraiture, landscape and architectural photos.

This is my first time using a f1.2 lens.

After renting it out for a test run- I decided to pull the trigger.
I wanted a bright, generalist lens for my R5 and I decided that this fit the bill.

I was aware how razor thin the DoF would be, but working with it has
been both challenging and rewarding. You really have to be mindful
when you're shooting at such narrow apertures. Many, like me, bought this lens because it is very sharp wide open (and it is) but I always have to keep in mind that it's okay to stop down- especially when shooting more than one subject during events.

The lens is heavy and can really weigh on your arms after a few hours of active use- that's no fault of the lens, just means that I should start working out :)

The size of this lens is definitely a step above typical f1.4/f1.8 primes and it definitely is something I considered. In my opinion, it's fine for me- it's size is pretty much in league with typical 24-70 f2.8 zooms. I do plan for this to be my primary travel lens once things open back up (paired with a 70-200 f4 and alongside a Ricoh GR3).

That being said- I'll probably stick to my GR3 for hiking :)

What I'm really looking forward to is taking this lens out to the city for some street shooting and environmental portraits.
If I had to nitpick a negative- it would be that the focusing speed isn't quite as fast as on my EF f4 L zooms (the focus limiter switch can alleviate this).

Amazing photos with outstanding sharpness. Lighter than my 85mm DS but just as sharp. My favorite lens at the moment.

Yes, it's big, heavy and expensive. I have had it only a couple of weeks and it has become my favorite Canon lens for family and events. It is a fantastic portrait lens since it isolates the subject and renders a dreamy background. I don't need o repeat what everyone else has said.

This is an amazing lens. Far surpasses the EF-50L. Sharp wide open. Although it does not have image stabilization, the R5 does. It's not missed. It is hefty, but no more than the RF 24-70L. It focuses fast and accurately. No back focus like the EF version. This truly an incredible lens. Yes it costs a lot. Is it worth it? Yes, for me, it is. Every penny
