The 150 x 170mm Blackstone Soft-Edge Graduated IRND 0.9 Filter from Wine Country Camera is a rectangular filter that helps to darken specific areas of an image, such as bright skies, while allowing for a normal, unaffected exposure in the other regions of the image. The filter is densest at the edge and tapers to clear by the middle, with a soft-edged line of transition between the dense and clear areas. A neutral density filter with a soft-edged line of transition is particularly useful for images that do not have a strongly defined transition between the sky and the foreground. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image, and this filter provides up to a 3-stop reduction in light from entering the lens.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and to promote nearly flat attenuation of visible and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. To provide neutrality across the visible and infrared spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks, one layer of Blackstone ND Coating is applied to each of this filter's surfaces. The Blackstone ND Coating is also designed to help minimize any effect on a digital camera's resolution when using this filter.

This 150 x 170mm Blackstone Soft-Edge Graduated IRND 0.9 Filter is constructed from Schott Ultra-White Glass for clarity as well as color fidelity and measures 2mm thick.

The 150 x 170mm Blackstone Soft-Edge Graduated IRND 0.9 Filter is pre-installed within a Wine Country Camera 150 x 170mm Filter Vault, which is designed to encase the edges of a 150 x 170mm, 2mm thick filter for use within a separately available Wine Country Camera 150mm Filter Holder. By encasing the sides of an installed filter, this filter vault helps to eliminate stray light, which could have unwanted effects on exposure. Additionally, the Wine Country Camera 150 x 170mm Filter Vault reinforces an installed filter's rigidity while preventing its sides from having to come into direct contact with a filter holder's slots. This protects those side surfaces and promotes sharp results by ensuring that the filter remains flat.

Installation of a compatible filter is accomplished by first turning the Wine Country Camera 150 x 170mm Filter Vault's brass Wine Coin lock into the open position. Located along the front of the filter vault's inner and outer top edges, the Wine Coin is a flat, disk cam lock that features a straight edge on one side and a rounded edge at the other. When the lock's straight edge is aligned with the filter vault's inner edge, a 150 x 170mm, 2mm thick filter can be set within the front of the filter vault. The Wine Coin can then be turned so that its rounded edge obstructs the installed filter, securing it within the filter vault.

A separately available Wine Country Camera 150mm Filter Holder includes an outer slot that can accommodate this 150 x 170mm Filter Vault. The filter holder also features a quick release button that is dedicated to the slot. When pressed, it allows a Wine Country Camera 150 x 170mm Filter Vault within a Wine Country Camera 150mm Filter Holder's outer slot to be adjusted upward or downward relative to the subject. When used with a Wine Country Camera 150mm Filter Holder's outer slot, an integrated safety-catch system prevents this 150 x 170mm Filter Vault from accidentally sliding out of the filter holder.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What size cap will fit this filter?

A: I contacted a technical Rep with Bower, and he tried it with both a standard type 52mm lens cap, and also the newer design many manufacturers are using with the center-pinch type and both fit without issue. I'm not sure what that comment in the customer reviews may have been experiencing but it will hold a standard 52mm lens cap.

Q: 2. What is outside diameter? I want to attach a screw in hood.

A: The outside diameter is 62mm.

Q: 3. What's the weight of the filter Could it be used instead of the balancing ring needed for the X5S?(drone proposes).

A: Unfortunately we cannot weight any products here and the manufacturers do not provide the weight of lens filters. It may be best to ask your question on the drone Q&A itself, but we would guess that it is the same weight and could be used as a balancing ring if necessary--though it is not an exact measurement.

Q: 4. what filter holder can be used with this filter?

A: I am using it in my Cavision matte box but any filter holder of those dimensions can be used. The 4x5.5 format is very common for filter holders on matte boxes although 3x3 and 4x4 holders also exist

Q: 5. Where is this made?

A: According to the information we have, our current inventory's Country of Origin is Germany. Please be aware this can change over the product's production life without notice.

Q: 6. Is it me or is the textprinted on the wrong (back) side of the filter? Circular pols only work one direction (not an issue when its in a threaded mount but this is reversible) and when I use this one in the correct way the writing on the glass faces the back. Anyone else notice this?

A: The word text u mean the numbers written on the filter. Stil i didnt notice it but its working perfectly for me. I dont think its printing mistake

Q: 7. I have a vivitar 0.43x wide angle filter that accepts 62mm filter threads. I'm considering getting this Bower 62mm Variable ND filter and a 58-62 step up ring so I can use it on both the wide angle filter and my Canon G40's lens. My question is; would there be any amount of vignetting that would render the use of the ND filter on the wide angle filter pointless? How much of a vignette should I expect?

A: I can confirm what Roland said, this filter becomes unusable at its maximum/darkest setting. Roll it back just a bit and it's fine, but do keep that in mind.

Q: 8. Hi Do you have the B+W series 7 0.9 ND filter?

A: The nearest option would this 2 stop version: https://bhpho.to/3x5JhyN Series size filters are only made for older lenses so the filter selection will be rather limited.

Q: 9. Would combining one of these with the Tilta Mirage's VND filter cause issues? I realize these are IRND and the VND is not, but I'm thinking I may sometimes need more than the 2.7 stops the VND offers.

A: Using the Vaxis VFX 95 IRND 1.5 Filter for Tilta Mirage Matte Box with another ND filter will increase internal reflections from the layers of glass, but it can be done.

Q: 10. Will this fit a 18-55mm nikon lens?

A: No, the Nikon 18-55mm is a 55mm lens filter.
