Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. Would this be adequate for the eclipse?
A: I wouldn't try it. The UV and other wavelengths that a re harmfull aren't blocked by it. But it's your sensor.
Q: 2. im deciding between this and the hoya pro nd 1000. which should i choose? i notice theres a pretty big price difference- $50. -thanks
A: I have been pleased with this one. I have not used the Hoya but have not found a need.
Q: 3. if i already own a Multi coated UV filter, would I able to screw this filter on that one and essentially achieved the same effect of the $149 3.0 ND multi coated version?
A: I have the filter that you are considering for purchase, the main purpose of multi coated filters is to allow more light transmission than single coated filters. I use this filter specifically to reduce light transmission so for my purposes, multi-coating and the additional cost was not a factor in my decision. Most UV filters allow additional filters to be attached to them but you will not achieve the same results as having one multicoated 3.0 filter since you will reduce light transmission through each piece of glass light travels through. In other words, adding a multi coated UV filter to a single coated Neutral Density will not increase the light transmission of the single coated neutral density filter. Essentially, by combining the filters, you will be achieving the opposite results.
Q: 4. Will it open up to almost clear? If not whats the lightest it goes?
A: It's black glass and that's that. Do all your camera settings first. Then add the ND filter and take the shot.
Q: 5. Will this filter be safe for photographing a solar eclipse?
A: To capture the solar eclipse with this lens you will have to have the shutter open for say 30 seconds but then maybe the eclipse will move a bit causing a blur so you will have to open the aperture more. I think it will work. I have it and its great.
Q: 6. Hi,- What is the thickness of the filter's frame? And without counting the threads?- Is it easy to clean?- Does it have threads on both sides?Thank you!!
A: Pablo,The thickness of the filter frame:with threads = 9/32 inch (.28125 inch)without threads = 11/64 inch (.17188 inch)Yes, it is easy to clean.Yes, the filter has threads on both sides. Female on the front of the filter and Male on the back side of the filter.I hope this helps.Best regards,David Rudd
Q: 7. Why is the 6 stop density more expensive than the 10 stop?
A: More popular items tend to be priced higher than non popular items. It's basically were the manufacturer priced the filter according to demand.
Q: 8. The picture they show with this ND filter looks terrible with the filter, is that a mistake or does this filter really do that to your shot?
A: i do not know what you refer to when you say the picture they show with this ND filter looks terrible with the filter, as i did not see any reference picture. all any ND filter does is cut down the light entering the camera lens, just like sunglasses do for our eyes. except this filter knocks down the light by a factor of 10 camera stops. this means that to get the proper exposure for any given aperture, the shutter has to be open for a much longer time to compensate for the filter. in fact, the shutter needs to be open approximately 1,000 times as long. for instance, if without the filter, a correct exposure is metered to be f/8 (or any aperture) at 1/250th a second, then, using the same aperture of f/8, the exposure would need to 4 seconds long. as the filter is neutral, there is no adverse effect on the color of the photograph. the only things that might effect picture quality are any movements that take place during the exposure, or any camera movements. when using this filter, there are few if any times that a tripod shouldn't be used. this filter is usually selected for the purpose of showing the effect of movement during the exposure like clouds or rushing water. it is a specialized and filter and not appropriate for general photography.
Q: 9. Can this be safely used for photographing a Solar Eclipse?
A: I would recommend 17 stops or more for solar eclipse, so I wouldn't recommend the K&F Concept Nano-X Series ND32000 ND Filter (100 x 100mm, 15-Stop) for solar eclipse.
Q: 10. Does this filter have a "normal" stop where it acts like a UV filter and doesn't darken the image or will automatically darken when put on?
A: This filter is always darkening the image by 10 stops. This is not a variable filter, it is a fixed 10 stop ND filter.
