Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will it provide EXIF data to the Nikon D850 files?

A: Unfortunately, this lens has no electronic contacts for transmitting pertinent lens data for EXIF embedded.

Q: 2. My Laowa 60mm 2:1 macro came with a filter but I believe earlier orders didn't according to reviews and they began to after people were concerned about the lens receding into the barrel with dust/debris. does this new one ship with the filter to begin with?

A: A filter is not included.

Q: 3. Is it suitable for Nikon APS-C such as Nikon D500 camera?

A: B&H # VE10028N is the Nikon F-Mount Version of this lens. You will want it for the D500, it is compatible. https://bhpho.to/2XgUCKB

Q: 4. For the Canon R6, I'm considering the RF (manual aperture) version vs. the EF (auto aperture) version (with Canon adapter). I have no EF lenses and understand that Canon meters wide open and then stops down for the shot. Besides convenience, what are pros/cons of manual vs. auto aperture for macro on a manual focus lens? If there are auto aperture advantages, are they outweighed by any effects of the adapter?

A: The benefit of having an auto exposure on the Venus Optics Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO Lens for Canon EF (Auto Aperture) is that you will be able to see through the lens because the camera will auto open the exposure to the widest it can go. If you have a manual exposure like on the Venus Optics Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO Lens for Canon RF you will need to open the aperture manually.

Q: 5. Hi, is this lens suitable for Sony Alpha A7SII?

A: Yes, it fits any Sony E mount camera.

Q: 6. If I adapt the Canon version on my Sony A7iii will the contacts still trigger Sony's system to help with manual focus plus let the camera see the exif data? The Sony version has no contacts.

A: If adapting the Canon EF version of this lens to the A7 III, the adapter will need to have electronic contacts on both ends for the EXIF data to be stored. In terms of manual focus, that would be handled by the focus peaking in the camera.

Q: 7. Does the Canon EOS R recognize the EF version as a full frame lens with the adapter or does it go into crop mode?

A: The EOS R, recognizes this lens as full frame.

Q: 8. Can this lens focus to Infinity? Or is it only for macro work?

A: Yes, this lens can focus to infinity. This means that you can use the lens for macro work and normal photography. Just be aware that this lens is fully manual.

Q: 9. Is this a flat field lens?

A: No, the Venus Optics Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO Lens is not a flat field lens.

Q: 10. Does this lens support Nikon AI (auto indexing)?

A: This lens is not constructed with the necessary AI coupling ridge, so it is not AI compatible.

I bought this to get my feet wet in macro photography and didn't have the highest expectations because of the price point. I was also concerned about the manual focusing. I put it on the camera and was instantly blown away. It's incredibly sharp so focussing isn't an issue except on the tightest macros, which is more about me holding still enough with the tiny depth of field. I discovered that I prefer manual focus for macro work. Another big plus is the boceh...gorgeous - see attached. While it is a beautiful lens for portraits, I may not use it just because of the manual focus. The Canon R5's eye tracking makes me a better photographer than I could ever be full manual.

I needed a macro lens to shoot product photos of fishing flies. I did a lot of research and this one stood far above the rest in its price range. I can get beautiful, crisp images with this lens - the price trade off comes in with the lack of auto-focus and image stabilization. This is no problem for my needs, but will be a hurdle for anyone who needs to be able to shoot without a tripod.

I almost purchased the Nikon Z 100mm macro but after researching macro lenses I decided to buy the Laowa at half the price. So far it has been superb. The focus ring is just stiff enough to allow precise focusing while not overly tight. Build quality is top quality and images are sharp.

Just took this lens out for a walk in the forest for the first time on my A7 III. I'm not a seasoned macro photographer, but wanted to give it a try - great project in COVID times. Whenever I managed to hold still without introducing motion blur, the photos from this lens are razor sharp. It's a nicely challenging learning experience. Getting anywhere beyond the 1:1 magnification definitely requires a tripod. The lens feels very premium and solid. It has heft to it without being enormous or super heavy. The smaller mirrorless cameras give it a manageable footprint. One minor flaw (but not enough to deduct a star!) is that the lens hood had the tiniest bit of play sometimes. Another improvement would be a proper lens pouch since this is not really a lens that lives on your camera permanently, but one that you take into nature. In my box (which is very pretty, almost Apple level presentation) there was only a plastic bag. Big plus though for including the 67 mm UV front filter as dust protection!

The lens is excellently made. It is a bit difficult to use because of the lack of image stabilization however. For the price, this can't be beat.

For the money this lens is pure gold. Full manual mode so you must have a basic knowledge of photography. Not weatherproof so be careful. I've seen a lot of reviews bashing this lens but I feel as if those reviews are from inexperienced photographers. If you're looking for a great Macro lens at a smaller price tag this is the ONE. Add a flash and a diffuser and BAM you will create some jaw dropping images.
