A: Depends on the size of the role you are using. You need the length of the role plus about 2-4 inches on each end. This gives you room to adjust on both sides.

A: The hooks by themselves can be mounted to a wall however, the knobs that turn (that come with the hooks, you will not be able to attach them to the hooks. Reason way, you will not have enough turning clearance from the wall to actually turn the knobs.
