Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. The grill looks similar on both sides. If I wanted to use this mic as a drum overhead, how should I position it? Which side would face downward?

A: With large condenser mics u would point it with whatever side has either the logo or the cardioid pattern symbol on it.

Q: 2. Can I use these to record audio on my Canon 5d M3? Will I need an additional connector? I am new to recording video. Thank you!

A: The MXL mics are not directly connectable to a DSLR camera without additional hardware. There are several camera interfaces that can support these mics and provide the power and connection necessary. The Beachtek DXA-SLR Ultra is a popular choice. This will allow you to connect the mics and record audio to the camera along with your video. A second and popular option would be to record the audio independently and marry the audio and video in editing software. For this a portable audio recorder like the Zoom H4n is a popular choice. Similar to the unit above it will support two mics and record them individually as well. In addition, with the proper cable the recorder can be connected to your camera as well.

Q: 3. Wondering how well this mic prevents plosives w/o a pop filter?

A: Not as well as some. You will probably want to use a pop filter.

Q: 4. Can they be put directly into a 3.5mm jack for smart phone recording?

A: You need to get an XLR to 3.5 mm adapter and then it worked very very well

Q: 5. Is it protected against accidental phantom power like the SE X1 R?

A: The MXL R144 HE Heritage Edition Ribbon Microphone is not protected against phantom power, and there is a warning in the user manual that phantom power may damage the microphone. If your equipment has a phantom power switch that is universal to multiple mic inputs, or if you want to be safe from accidental button presses, a blocker like this can protect your mic: https://bhpho.to/3L0h4CV. If you want a little bit more clean gain from the microphone, in-line preamps such as the Polsen XP-30D or the Cloudlifter CL-1 can protect the mic from phantom power while also providing you with a better level signal.

Q: 6. Does this work on a Chromebook?

A: I contacted the manufacturer and confirmed that the Tempo SK mic is indeed compatible for use with a Chromebook.

Q: 7. I recently purchased a zoom F4. When I plugged in one of my laveliers it seems only one side is working. So I plugged in the other lavelier and get the same result. To make sure it's not my headset , I listened to pre-recorded music. My headset are ok. So I also checked to make sure nothing is panned on the zoom f4. I haven't used my laveliers hardly at all over a few years. Then it was only once. Weird?

A: I would check and make sure you have mono mix on for the Zoom, and it's taking the XLR channels individually, not trying to do anything with a stereo mix which might have caused your one channel in headphones.

Q: 8. How can I use the mic,? I connected but no function

A: This is a condenser mic and needs phantom power from the mixer/pre-amp. If it does not work with it, then the product must be defective. With phantom power it should work

Q: 9. What is the best XLR connector cable to use with this mic set?

A: I don't know how long you want the cables to be so I can't be that specific. But as far as quality I would recommend Mogami, Canare and RapcoHorizon.

Q: 10. Hello is this microphone pc friendly ? could i plug it to computer?

A: This microphone has a standard 3-pin XLR connector on it. To connect to a computer, you will need an audio interface. There are many interfaces on the market that are all-in-one, with microphone preamps. In short, no, this microphone will not connect straight into a computer.
