Designed as a dependable and highly portable starter scope, the Celestron AstroMaster 102AZ 102mm f/6.5 Alt-Az Refractor Telescope is a complete observational platform for making detailed observations of the moon and planets or for comet-hunting. Its manual alt-azimuth mount's locking altitude clutch and locking pan handle allow users to easily find and track objects with reduced vibrations. The entire rig assembles and breaks down without the need for tools, so users can set up fast and get observing sooner.

This version of the AstroMaster comes with two eyepieces that yield low and medium magnifications and a 90° diagonal that sports an integrated erecting prism to correct images and allow the scope to be used as a conventional spotting scope for terrestrial use. The diagonal also places the user's head in a more comfortable position, especially when it is pointed directly overhead. An adjustable-height stainless steel tripod supports the mount and optical tube and comes with a center tray that conveniently holds accessories while improving stability and reducing vibrations.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. As a beginner, are there any essential accessories I should consider for the base kit?

A: The AstroMaster Accessory Kit #94307 is recommended because it provides two additional 1.25" eyepieces, a 2X Barlow lens, three filters, and a cleaning cloth. This kit will enhance the performance of your Celestron AstroMaster, or most any other telescope. The moon filter will help block some moonlight so you will be able to see more lunar detail. The two color filters (Red and Blue) will highlight features on Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.

Q: 2. What type of eyepieces are included? What are their apparent field of view?

A: The Celestron StarSense Explorer DX 102AZ 102mm f/6.5 AZ Refractor Telescope BH #CESSEDX102R • MFR #22460 comes with (2) eyepieces. A wide angle 25mm eyepiece and a maximum magnification eyepiece of 10mm

Q: 3. I see there is a recommendation for a carry case for the tripod (Ruggard Deluxe Padded 42" Tripod Case). What would the recommendation be for a carry case for the OTA? Or does the OTA come in a case?

A: The Ruggard Deluxe Padded 42" Tripod Case (Black) should work with the OTA, as well as Mount/Tripod.

Q: 4. Can the phone take pictures of the objects ?

A: No, the phone on the side is only for alignment. You can attach a 2nd camera or phone to the eyepiece using this adapter: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1435002-REG/celestron_81035_basic_smartphone_adapter_1_25.html

Q: 5. Is there a bag or case for the Celestron Omin 102 Az, with tripod? Will the Meade bag you have for a 102 scope? If not, you you have a suggestion?

A: First it is not recommend that a telescope OTA and tripod be placed in the same carry bag. Unless the bag is big enough to provide ample protection between the OTA and tripod. If you are looking foe a carry bag for the OTA only I would recommend the Ruggard Deluxe Padded 42" Tripod Case (Black) BH #RUBD3042 • MFR #BD-3042 Ruggard Deluxe Padded 42" Tripod Case (Black) BH #RUBD3042 • MFR #BD-3042

Q: 6. Which Barlow lenses would you recommend for this scope?

A: I would recommend this Celestron Omni 2x Barlow Lens: https://bhpho.to/2ZeywLX

Q: 7. Does this telescope require an erecting prism for terrestrial viewing? If so, which one is recommended?

A: First of all, do not buy it as mine was returned because of material flaws, loose screws and sloppy screw holes that were not put in correctly. I will not buy any Celestron product any more.

Q: 8. Where was this made? Country of Origin?

A: The StarSense Explorer DX 102AZ is manufactured in China.

Q: 9. Cuanto cuesta este telescopio con envio incluido a Lagos De Moreno, Mxico y que tal se ve jupiter y sus lunas?

A: For the most up-to-date dealer information, try using the dealer locator on our website. You can find it here: https://www.celestron.com/apps/store-locator/ Under ideal seeing conditions, the AstroMaster 70AZ will reveal Jupiter and its four brightest moons.

Q: 10. As a beginner, are there any essential accessories I should consider?

This scope seems to be the best one of this series, as was reviewed in Sky and Telescope. The use of our smart phone for the finder is really clever. It came very well packed and on time. Very pleased with the scope and with B & H.

I got this telescope for my husband for his birthday and he absolutely loves it. Easy set up, connecting to the phone was easy, and it works extremely well. Love the red light feature of the app. Can't wait for more clear nights to use it.

Setting up the telescope was a snap. Took me about 30 minutes while distracted (and it was my first time setting one up). Had to wait until daytime the next day to set up the finder scope, which took 5 minutes. And by evening, I was able to see Mars. The following evening, Saturn's rings, and Jupiter and 4 of its moons. Very happy with it.

Excellent main optics and fairly stable mount. Quick and easy to align with no prior knowledge of astronomy. Perfectly useful as is but better sharpness with star diagonal. Observing in a few minutes vs an hour or more of setup, alignment and cooling of my old 8" SCT. Perfect for the "major attractions" in an urban backyard. Phone tracking works every time to get targets in the view of the low power eyepiece.

I got this for my husband as a birthday present. Neither of us had history using a telescope and he was able to zoom in on the moon in no time. Amazing! Very fun, educational, and easy to use.
