The Audio-Technica U843R is a three-element multidirectional boundary microphone offering customizable coverage in mono or stereo for a variety of audio and video conferencing applications. Its three cardioid condenser elements can be utilized separately or together to realize cardioid, omnidirectional, or figure-8 polar patterns. Levers on the mic base allow repositioning of the left and right mic elements for 360° or 300° sound pickup when all three elements are employed.

The U843R delivers clear, intelligible speech tonality, thanks to its 70 Hz to 15 kHz frequency response and 80 Hz low-cut filter. UniGuard shielding inhibits radio-frequency interference from sources such as fluorescent lights and wireless systems, so you're assured clean signal transmission. The low-profile, heavy-duty housing features four slots to enable proper routing of the attached microphone cable, which has an unterminated pigtail with stripped and tinned leads that can be soldered to your preferred connectors (available separately). Each mic element is operable via 11 to 52 VDC phantom power.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this mic picking up footsteps on a theater stage?

A: This is designed for surface-mounted applications on conference tables, podiums, lecterns, etc...

Q: 2. Do I need to buy anything extra for it to attach to my camera's hot shoe?

A: no you shouldn't need to

Q: 3. Will this mic work on a DSLR?

A: Yes. I use it with a DSLR as well as a basic consumer level camcorder. Youll need a 3.5mm to 3-Pin XLR Female adapter cable though.

Q: 4. Can i use this with an android phone

A: The ATR4697 features a mono 1/8 jack designed for connection to a portable audio recorder. Although the connector is the same size, will not be recognized by a smartphone or tablet.

Q: 5. Can this mic pick a sound from a distance like 5 or 6 feet?

A: Yes, it will still pick up audio at that distance, however for better sound quality try to stay within a 3-5 feet range from the subject you recording.

Q: 6. I notice a lot of details talking about a battery powered phantom source, but perhaps that this one is not the version that works with a battery? Does this have a battery phantom source, or is there another model that does? This is the only gooseneck that comes up under the battery powered search filter.

A: We use this mic with a wireless mic base unit that is part of System10 from Audio-Technica. The mic base is the phantom p/s. The combination provides good and clear service for our needs. We use it as a podium mic.

Q: 7. I'm a little confused about their statement Self-contained electronics eliminate need for external power modules . It IS a condenser mic. I am assuming it still requires phantom power. Would the 12v phantom power from a typical shure mic mixer provide adequate performance?

A: It is a 48volt phantom powered mic. Whether or not it can work on 12 volts can be answered by reading the spec on the AT web site.

Q: 8. What is the best choice to small school auditorium, the omnidirectional or Hipercardiode ?

A: Omni-directional mics are more susceptible to feedback, especially in smaller spaces. A Hypercardioid microphone usually provide the best gain before feedback ratio, however they are not very forgiving and strategic placement is critical in order to get satisfactory results. One nay consider a cardioid polar pattern as they are more forgiving; not too broad to pick overly pick up background noise, but not so directional to the point that a user must be right on the mic for an audible recording or amplification.

Q: 9. Which case comes with this microphone? I have an old AT815b and my case just fell apart. I need a replacement case

A: The Audio-Technica AT8035 Long Shotgun Microphone includes the Audio-Technica SG1 Case. Audio-Technica specifies the SG3 Case for use with the AT815b Line+ Gradient Condenser Microphone, which is not offered by B&H at this time.

Q: 10. I'm looking for a microphone to capture dancer audio on a stage (steps, claps, tambourine, etc.). I'm also hoping to pick up the audience applause/cheering with the same microphone. I'm hoping I could tape this down on the edge of the stage to achieve that. Has anyone done this? What were your results? What kind of microphone would work better? Thanks!

A: This mic will work for you but be aware that the sound coming form the front of the mic will be much louder than from behind it since it is a cartioid microphone.
