Characterized by its speed and portrait-length field of view, the Primoplan 75mm f/1.9 II from Meyer-Optik Gorlitz is a sophisticated, yet simple prime for Canon EF-mount cameras. The bright f/1.9 maximum aperture pairs well with the short telephoto focal length to allow working with shallow depth of field and selective focusing techniques, and the fast aperture also benefits working in difficult lighting conditions. Its manual focus design further offers control when focusing down to 2.5', and a 15 rounded-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth bokeh quality. The five elements, four groups optical design makes use of Schott glass for a high degree of clarity, and an O'Hara Anti Reflex Coating has also been applied to limit flare and surface reflections for improved contrast and color accuracy. Additionally, the lens features an anodized aluminum housing that is durable, lightweight, and contributes to smooth, silent focusing performance.

Portrait-length prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however it can also be used on APS-C models where it will provide a 120mm equivalent focal length.

Fast f/1.9 maximum aperture allows for extensive control over depth of field, for working with selective focus techniques, and also benefits working in low-light conditions.

Inspired by the original Cooke triplet optical design, this lens uses a five elements, four groups layout in which the central dispersion element is surrounded by two groups of converging elements, and the rear element has a biconvex converging design to produce notable smoothness and clarity.

Schott glass is used for high clarity and contrast, and each of the elements feature an O'Hara Anti Reflex Coating to suppress lens flare and ghosting for color neutrality.

Manual focus design permits working with subjects as close as 2.5' away.

Fifteen rounded diaphragm blades contribute to a smooth bokeh quality.

Front 52mm filter thread is consistent throughout the Meyer-Optik Gorlitz version II lens series.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What is the country of origin?

A: OPC Optical Precision Components Europe GmbH based in Bad Kreuznach, Germany

Q: 2. The photo shows f16 and the text says f22 for max?? Which is it??

A: The minimum aperture is f/22, what you see in the photo is the depth of field scale, not the aperture ring. Basically it is not particularly necessary to show f/22 on the DOF scale.

Q: 3. In the specs, it is put forth that the angle of view is 20 degrees. This should be about 40 degrees. Is there something wrong?

A: For a 58mm lens focused at infinity used on a full-frame 36x24mm sensor, the angle of view across the width of the sensor would be approximately 34.48°, while the angle of view across the height of the sensor would be approximately 23.38°, and the diagonal angle of view across the sensor would be approximately 40.91°.

Q: 4. does this lens output exif data?

A: The Meyer-Optik Gorlitz Primoplan 58mm f/1.9 II Lens for Sony E does not output exif data.

Q: 5. Your website indicates that this lens is compatible with (and designed for use with) the Leica M7. But you indicate elsewhere in your website that this lens is not rangefinder-coupled. So, how is this lens to be focussed when mounted on a Leica M7 (other than with approximate focus on the distance scale)?

A: The Meyer-Optik Gorlitz Primoplan 75mm f/1.9 II Lens for Leica M is not rangefinder coupled. You do have to use the distance scale.

Q: 6. Will this product be returnable?

A: Yes , 30 days from the time you receive it

Q: 7. Is it rangerfinder coupled?

A: This lens is not rangefinder coupled.

Q: 8. Does it have a declicked aperture?

A: Yes, this lens would have a de-clicked aperture.

Q: 9. Do I need to buy an adapter for Leica CL?

A: No adapter is needed. It will fit the Leica CL directly.

Q: 10. When used with the Z8, will Focus peaking and zebra stripes be possible?

A: Focus peaking and zebra strips are a camera feature of the Nikon Z8 and can be used with any lens such as the Meyer-Optik Gorlitz Primoplan 58mm f/1.9 II Lens for Nikon Z.

The lens is much lighter than I had imagined. It takes sharp pictures and makes the camera set up overall less bulky. It is an excellent investment.

Excellent condition out of the box. Teamed up with my Canon RP it makes a light easy to handle package. Great sharpness and more than good enough shooting wide open. For my use case I do not miss auto focus. Very good value and a obvious quality build.

This lens feels very flimsy but for the price you cannot beat it. It takes awesome pictures. Great lens for portraits and night photos with no flash due to the low aperture.

Great image quality wide open. I like how this has a 0.5 m close focus and is nice and compact. Definitely a good buy for a short telephoto.

Unbeatable ergonomics, very flat field, very low distortion and focus shift. Very sharp at 2.8, stupid sharp from f/4.
Stretching the close focus limit to .5 meters is a great help from time to time - I get to .6 frequently.
Frame lines on M10-P are a real drag, but I’m trying to adapt…
Here are a coupla shots from yesterday at MFD - f/8:

The nifty fifty as my friend calls it, is my favorite beginner lens. My shots seem more natural and sharper, too. The bokeh is FANTASTIC in portrait mode. Plus, the lack of zoom gets me off my butt to try new perspectives and move around my subjects more. It's so great for capturing quick moments with moving subjects, even in lower light. Don't get me wrong: it's not a magic lens that suddenly makes all of your photographs NatGeo-worthy...but it's a great way to upgrade from kit lens.
