A: I use these speakers with Onkyo TX-NR626. This receiver maybe not the best in class, but it delivers absolutely great sound and has all features I need form a home theater system. However, you absolutely need a central speaker and a subwoofer.

A: Assuming that both types are set up correctly (height, room correction, etc..) speakers with the same drivers will perform similarly. Towers generally will have better imaging and a more robust lower end. Room size makes a difference.
