The 67mm #16 Orange Filter from Tiffen is a filter designed to build contrast in black and white photography. The effect of the contrast will be greater than the #15 yellow when shooting B&W landscape, marine, or aerial photos. Therefore, making skies more dramatic and darker. The filter has a filter factor of 3, so you must increase by 1 2/3 of a stop of your exposure to compensate.

Tiffen filters are not dyed, but are manufactured by using ColorCore technology. This process laminates the filter material between two pieces of optical glass and grinds down and polishes the glass. The glass is then mounted to the metal ring, which after that can be screwed onto the lens for the desired effect.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Would this orange filter be the same as a number 85 Orange filter?

A: The Tiffen #16 Orange Filter (58mm) differs from an 85 Orange color conversion filter. The Tiffen #16 Orange Filter (58mm) is a contrast filter for B&W images. Instead, get the Tiffen 58mm 85 Color Conversion Filter, BH #TI8558.

Q: 2. How many stops reduction for this orange filter?

A: Generally, the B+W #550/040 Orange MRC Basic Filter (67mm) will provide a half stop to a full stop of reduction.

Q: 3. This filter is very loose (cannot fully tighten, keep rotating) when stacked on top of a B+W XS-Pro 67mm filter... Faulty unit? XS-Pro 67mm diameter slightly wider than TIffen 67mm?

A: I believe this filter is meant to be loose so that it can be easily turned to get the gradation to hit your photograph in the perfect position. Mine is loose as well and works well. It's my favorite filter!

Q: 4. does it have HT coating on lens?

A: This filter is not coated.

Q: 5. I have a Polarizer filter , do I need a Graduated HD filter for high contrast photos?

A: The graduated HD filter is often used to mitigate bright sky against a darker landscape. I sometimes use it in other orientations to cut down bright areas of photo I am taking - imagine taking a photo of a dark building where the bright area has a vertical orientation on the left or right, or taking a photo through a door or similar portal. On the other hand, while a polarizer might provide some general overall brightness reduction, it is generally used to emphasize darker areas that are located at right angles to the light source (such as darkening sky against the clouds in a band 90 degrees from the sun), or to eliminate or reduce glare from reflected light - light reflected from smooth surfaces is highly polarized, light reflected from rough surfaces, such as the ocean, is rather scattered and the glare can be only minimally reduced by a polarizer. So the functions are different, and the graduated filter reduces the contrast (although I guess it could be used to exaggerate the contrast) whereas the polarizer is often used to enhance contrast.

Q: 6. What kind of metal is the frame made out of?

A: Tiffen uses aluminum filter rings for their filters.

Q: 7. Is it soft-edge graduated?

A: Yes.

Q: 8. How many stops of light does this cut from the frame?

A: 1/3 stop of light loss

Q: 9. What is the ring material, brass or aluminum?

A: The filter ring is made of Aluminum.

Q: 10. What is a graduated neutral density filter?Does the filter rotate? By this I mean, can I rotate the filter to high light certain areas?

A: A graduated neutral-density filter is an optical filter that has a variable light transmission. Typically half of the filter is of neutral density which transitions, either abruptly or gradually, into the other half which is clear. It is used to bring an overly-bright part of a scene into the dynamic range of film or sensor. For example, it can be used to darken a bright sky so that both the sky and subject can be properly exposed. There are typically two types of graduated ND filters, which are hard edge and soft edge. This particular Tiffen Graduated 0.6 ND filter is a feathered graduated ND filter, which means that there is a natural-appearing taper between the density and clear areas of the filter. This filter does not rotate.
