This is one of those pieces of gear one holds off buying, but finally gives into paying the price - and never regretting the purchase. I always carry this onto location, dissembled from the tabletop tripod. Separately, the two pieces stow away in remarkably small space. There are two versions of the ball head - the short and the long. I recommend the long one, since the longer versions allows for a handgrip to further steady the tripod when absolutely needed.

The engineering for the head and tabletop goes back to roughly 70 years and the Leica folks have kept the patent without need for improvement. Apparently they got it right on the first go. It is amazing how much weight such a small head can handle, thanks to its grooved ball head. Anyway, German engineering/manufacturing at its straight forward finest. (If you can fine it second hand at a good price, jump for it. The gear is virtually indestructible.)

All I can say is, I've had my Leica set (this ballhead plus the legs) for over 30 years and they are still rock solid. I take them with me wherever I go, and have supported everything from a Canon G9 to A Nikon D200 with 18-200 or 70-200 f2.8 lens. An often overlooked use of this unit is to use a convenient wall as a support - the legs will handle a lot of weight so you can hold the assembly against a sturdy vertical surface and keep the camera completely still for long exposures. Highly recommended - costly but it's the last one you'll ever have to buy (so long as you don't lose it, I guess)

Frankly, I can mount my camera directly to the tabletop tripod. This ball head enables you to tilt the camera whichever way you want. It adds about 5" to the height of the tripod which I need. Very beautiful and solid construction.

I have had one of these since the sixties, and use it a quite lot.
Since that time, I have acquired a number of ball heads, but always reach for this one.
I finally decided to get another, so that I always have one readily available.

I have had one since 1960s with the Leica tabletop foldable legs traveled all over with it, use it for cameras with long lenses and flashes. Very sturdy. Placed in my traveling bag this morning going to an air and old car show in the morning don't need any other tripod for this event. Can be used as a handle threaded to the camera for hand holding stability. Just another fine product provided by B&H. After traveling all over mine is still shiny as the day I purchased it. It is a tool that I respect but do not treat tenderly. It has worked fine for all size cameras including 4 x 5 and Hasselblad truly a work Horse in confined space.

Built like a tank, should last forever with proper care. Use the Leica table top tripod. I use mine with my Leica M7.
