A: Like most any time lapse, you can do so for a long as you wish. The issue is more getting power to the device. You will need to research time lapse calculations to get a grasp of the process.

A: Yes, you can move the camera manually across the slider, but it is not built for that and we can't recommend it, as the gears might prevent you from getting a smooth shot.
