Leverages 30 years of lineage to create the latest in the OC9 series cartridge; the Audio-Technica Consumer AT-OC9XEB is a dual moving coil stereo cartridge with a Elliptical Bonded stylus that is highly prized by vinyl enthusiasts and professional critics for its musical transparency, expression of sound, and precision construction.

The dual moving coil cartridge features a Elliptical Bonded stylus, which is designed to provide outstanding channel separation, while the Pure Copper by Ohno Continuous Casting (PCOCC) coils ensure pure audio transmission and are aligned in a reverse V-shaped formation to exert less pressure on the stylus, thereby minimizing distortion. Other enhancements include a rigid aluminum body that reduces resonance, a neodymium magnet, and premium permendur yoke that dramatically increases the magnetic energy, ensuring rich, full-range audio with a high transient response. The AT-OC9XEB comes pre-threaded, enabling it to be mounted to a headshell or integral tonearm with just two screws (no nuts required). Also included are a non-magnetic screwdriver, mounting hardware (screws and washers), a plastic protector, and a brush.

Q: 1. Will this cart work in a Realistic Lab 1600 Turntable? Thanks, G

A: Based on internet research, the Realistic Lab 1600 turntable has a P mount cartridge connection. This Audio Technica cartridge should be compatible the with turntable.

Q: 2. Is this cartridge fully capable of playing CD-4, QS, SQ, and other 4 channel quadraphonic records?

A: This phono cartridge cannot be used for this type of multi-4 channel vinyl record; playback: Phono cartridges with very high frequency range were rare in the 1970s but became much more common in later years. Only through the use of an elliptical tip stylus is the cartridge able to accurately reproduce the necessary extended range. This stylus is usually marketed as a "Shibata", "Line Contact" or "Micro Ridge" type. By contrast, a standard conical or cone shape stylus has less contact area with the record groove. CD-4 playback in 4 channels also requires a specialized CD-4 demodulator. Such demodulators have not been sold commercially since the 1970s. These were often built as independent components. However, some audio receivers and or amplifiers built in the 1970s included the CD-4 demodulator as a built-in feature, along with FM radio and amplifier circuitry. The sum of the front and rear signals are combined on each wall of the record grove, then a very high frequency carrier level is applied which contains the difference signal. This signal starts at 30,000 cycles and extends up near 50,000 cycles. When played on a regular stereo, these discs sound normal (hence compatible), but to hear the quad separation, the signal must be demodulated. A typical high-performance CD-4 system would include a turntable with a CD-4 compatible phono cartridge, a CD-4 demodulator, a four-channel amplifier (or receiver), and four identical full-range loudspeakers.[4] CD-4 encoded records were also compatible with conventional two-channel stereo playback systems. In stereo mode all four channels of music can be heard over two speakers. Specialized equipment is not required for stereo playback.
