Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How does it differ from the fixer that it replaced?

A: Hi--no changes were made to the product, but the packaging and wholesale arrangements were changed slightly.

Q: 2. The description says D-76 is suitable for push processing. Can I use it to pull film 1 stop?

A: D-76 can be used to pull or push process film. But it is mot designed for that. So, depending on the film it might not give the best results.

Q: 3. To mix D-76 you put all the contents of the package in 1 gallon of water to make the stock solution, correct? Then when it comes time to develop a roll of film, do you dilute the stock solution? Do you reuse this developer after you develop 1 roll of film or do you discard? Thank you!

A: Hi, Arlen:You can either dilute the stock dilution 1+1 with water or use it straight. My preference for roll film is to use it straight, although I know that some photographers use it diluted. I dilute this developer 1+1 when I develop 4x5 film.Remember that D-76 reduces the film speed by almost 1 stop. For instance, when I shoot Kodak T-max 400, I shoot at 320. For 35 mm film, my developer of choice is Kodak XTol because in my experience it doesnt reduce the speed film, so I can shoot at 400 ASA. These are my personal preferences, and they work for me. Other photographers may think otherwise. May you have any other questions, dont hesitate to ask.

Q: 4. what is te weight of this item?

A: The 1 liter packet of D-76 powder weighs 100g (it's on the package!).

Q: 5. Why is it taking Kodak so long to fix this? Any end in sight?

A: Kodak still has not give us a delivery date on Professional DEKTOL Paper Developer (To Make 1 gal, 2019 Version).

Q: 6. Is this fixer comparable with developers from non-Kodak manufacturers? Specifically Ilford DD-X/Microphen, etc?

A: Kodak Professional Kodafix Fixer (32 oz, to Make 1 gal) can be used with developers from other manufacturers.

Q: 7. How many time it can be reused after mixing solution?

A: A general rule-of-thumb would require you to test your working solution immediately after mixing to find its clearing time, then when it takes twice as long as the original test to clear the film, you may discard it. In practice, to test your working solution, you can take an unexposed piece of film (such as the film leader) and place a drop of fixer on the emulsion side of the film. Leave it for approximately 20-30 seconds. Then place the film into the fixer, ensuring it is covered. Time how long it takes for the clear spot to disappear (when you can no longer tell the spot you placed the drop of fixer from the rest of the completely clear film). This would be the fixer's clearing time. You would double this time amount to find the amount of time it takes to fix your film (i.e., if it took 2 minutes 10 seconds for the film to become completely clear and the dot to disappear, you would fix film for 4 minutes 20 seconds). You would test your fixer every time before using the fixer. When, during your test, it takes twice as long to fix your scrap film leader to clear as it did when you first mixed the working solution, it may be discarded and you may make a new working solution. (if you wish, you may wait until it takes triple the time your original test took to clear, but this would result in extremely long fixing times).

Q: 8. Can this developer (D-76) be used for one time or for few rolls of film?

A: I use it in a 5 roll can then throw it out. I do use my film Fix again as paper fix if its not more than a couple of days between uses

Q: 9. What is the difference between the 2019 version of D76 and previous versions?

A: There is no difference between versions just different packaging and sku #'s.

Q: 10. the bottle I have has the date 2021/09/20. It is now 2024. It is completely sealed. You figure it's good?

A: Since the Kodak Professional Kodafix Fixer is sealed, it should be good.

Kodafix is the only fixer I use for both film & B/W prints. It has great storage life. I have never had a problem with archival standards when used according to Kodak's recommendations. I also like the fact that the hardener is already in the formulation. It was manufactured by Kodak in the UK, but my latest purchase indicates on the bottle, it's now made in the USA (Rochester?) I'm sure, either place of origin, it's still up to Kodak's high standards.

I was going to make my own fixer, bought Kodak instead. I have developed ten rolls of film with the 1 liter that I mixed up and it still clears film in less that 30 seconds.
I will buy again.

I used this for film, not paper - mixed up the stock solution with distilled water and had absolutely no problems. Like D-76, this stuff is tried and true - professionals know it, and Kodafix is ultra-easy for even beginners to use.

I've been using Kodak fixer since the 70's and it just works. Basic, cost-effective fixer has no equal.
