Designed specifically for the unique needs of computerized telescopes, the Celestron PowerTank Lithium LT Power Pack is built with a rechargeable lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide [Li(NiMnCo)O2] battery that delivers a steady charge over long periods and requires less maintenance than traditional sealed lead-acid batteries. A built-in 12 volt regulated circuit provides your telescope with up to 8 hours of consistent power at the proper voltage for optimum performance, and to keep your other gear like phones, cameras, or handheld GPS units going while you're out observing there is a rapid-charge USB port. Ideally suited for off-the-grid applications, the housing is compact and lightweight so it won't take up a lot of space in your kit. The PowerTank comes with a 6.5-foot telescope power cord and an AC charger.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. what’s the best way to keep this battery charged or uncharged?

A: The Celestron PowerTank Lithium should be kept at around 40-50% State of Charge to be ready for immediate use – this is approximately 3.8 Volts per cell – while tests have suggested that if this battery type is kept fully charged the recoverable capacity is reduced over time. The voltage of each cell should not fall below 2 volts as at this point the anode starts dissolving causing copper shunts to form which will cause an irreversible loss of capacity. Similarly lithium based batteries can be damaged by over charging which causes the cathode to decompose.

Q: 2. Can a dslr be used with this telescope to photograph the moon.

A: The Celestron AstroMaster LT 70AZ Telescope and be adapted to a DSLR using this barlow https://bhpho.to/4ccdNgb and a t-mount adapter such as this one for a Canon DSLR: https://bhpho.to/40ZMsIZ. However, due to the weight of a DSLR the LT-70AZ is not really recommend. Using a smartphone plus this smartphone adapter would be better: https://bhpho.to/3bqiPIf

Q: 3. will this work with a Celestron NexStar 6SE?

A: It should, I use mine for a cpc1100. It's a great battery back. I will not use an extension chord again. If u get serious into this hobby, u need to get a Tele Vue diagonal and televue eyepieces. Then you will get bigger scopes, and then your officially hooked. Good luck!

Q: 4. I'm not interested in having an AM/FM radio, a siren, flashlights, etc. All in want is something that will power my telescope all night...Are there any similar products that don't have all the extra features? I would prefer something much smaller but with the same capacity. Thank you so much for any advice.

A: I can suggest you pose your question on some of the astronomy forums or go to star parities to see what others use. I have this product and has done a very good job for me.

Q: 5. does the celestron power tank 17 still have the jumper cables to jump start a car?

A: No, it has jumper post only. The manual says that you cannot jump a car with power tank tank attached and it will not help with a completely dead battery. It can only be used to top off battery if starter is turning slowly.

Q: 6. What is the weight of the battery?

A: I already answered that it's about 16 lb. What is shown as the BEST ANSWER is 6-7 lb. This is not correct, it's about 16 lb. as I said. It's heavy for its size, as it is essentially a car battery with other features. Also, the image shown is not quite correct. it shows three female connectors together near the top left. Those used to be 3, 6, and 9 volt outputs on an older version. They have been replaced by two USB connectors. The description is correct, but not the image.

Q: 7. Do I need to buy an additional cable to use with this to power the Celestron 5se?

A: It's compatible to the 5se out of the box. See this link for the Compatibility chart. https://www.celestron.com/products/powertank-17?_pos=1&_sid=c25b3e762&_ss=r

Q: 8. Can anyone with this item please confirm that the 4 red battery lights DO NOT blink in sequence when the power is flowing? Mine do not blink,. but the manual says they should blink in sequence when the power is flowing out. I also have the smaller power tank, the next mosdel down, and the blue lights on that do blink when powering something. Thanks

A: The 4 red battery lights in the PowerTank Lithium Pro do not blink in sequence when power is flowing. The PowerTank Lithium's 4 blue lights will blink in sequence when power is flowing. We are looking into revising the manual.

Q: 9. Does this power tank has a 12V DC car/vehicle plugs to power my mount? Other Celestron power tanks have 2 of them but there is no mention of such plugs in this one.Thank you for your assistance

A: Buy a 5.5mm x inner diameter of 2.1mm barrel plug to female cigarette socket adapter and power away !

Q: 10. Are the USB ports on this a PD rated managed power delivery port? In other words, does it have circuitry that senses draw and regulates output to avoid damaging gear?

A: Yes, it dose. It has to be plugged into a devise that is drawing 1 amp or more. It also has an emergency shut-off.
