A tremendously flexible standard zoom for APS-C-format DSLRs, the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM from Canon pairs the 27.2-88mm equivalent focal length range with a bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture. Benefitting this design is a sophisticated optical layout, which includes both Ultra-Low Dispersion glass and aspherical elements to significantly reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations for improved clarity and sharpness throughout the zoom range. A Super Spectra coating has also been applied to individual elements to suppress flare and ghosting for increased contrast when working in bright environments.

Beyond the optical attributes, this 17-55mm is also characterized by its advanced three stop-effective Image Stabilizer system to minimize the appearance of camera shake. Also complementing handling is a sophisticated ring-type USM, which provides quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override.

Versatile wide-angle to portrait-length zoom is designed for APS-C-format Canon EF-S-mount DSLRs and offers a 27.2-88mm equivalent focal length range.

Bright constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent illumination throughout the zoom range and also affords greater control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.

Two Ultra-Low Dispersion glass elements noticeably reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color fidelity.

Three aspherical elements minimize spherical aberrations and distortions for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.

Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.

An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to three shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.

A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing design and optimized focusing algorithms, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.

Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will the EF-S17-55 operate perfectly with a Sony Fs7? Image stabilization and auto focus are a must. I also need a recommendation for a Canon to Sony E Mount

A: That, lens will work on the FX7. The adapter is very important as to what works and does not work. This is a good adapter. But like most it does not work with every lens. Q: 2. f2.8 on this lens compared to Canon 50mm 1.8 makes a difference? f2.8 on this lens feels less bright. let me know if anyone noticed it. Tested on Canon 80d

A: This lens is less bright compared to a 50mm 1.8. However you do have the flexibility of zoom.

Q: 3. Will this lens work on a Sony A7sii with a fotodiox adapter? If so, will the image quality suffer because the Canon 17 - 55 is designed for APS-C sensors? I'm more concerned with image quality than auto focusing performance.

A: You would need to shoot in the APS-C/crop size senor mode when using this lens on the a7S II as this lens does not have an image circle large enough to cover a full frame sensor. This will cut down significantly on the resolution of the files you will get from the camera.

Q: 4. How many stops of image stabilization?

A: This lens has about 3 stops of stabilization.

Q: 5. Would this lens work with a Canon EOS Rebel XTi?

A: It works perfectly with XTi - I used to have it and liked much better even than Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L. In my opinion EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 is the best Canon zoom lens for the cropped bodies. Enjoy!

Q: 6. Will this lens be a good upgrade from my 80d's kit lens? I need it to perform good good for stills and video especially with autofocus.

A: Not sure what comes with the 80D kit, but this is a fantastic wide angle lens and never dissappoints me, even in less than desirable conditions. I'm not much for video, but my guess is that it will perform beyond your expectations.

Q: 7. I'm wanting a lens for my granddaughter's wedding and other future events is this the lens for my Canon 80d?

A: Yes, works with my 80d. I love the lens!

Q: 8. I want to verify that this product is compatible with a Cannon 70D Camera. This is a EP-S lens and they are compatible with a APS-C Sensor (the 70D) but can't find it on a list that is compatible to a Cannon 70D because it is a just released camera.

A: As the Canon EOS 70D DSLR camera has both an EF and EF-S lens mount, the camera accepts all EF and EF-S lenses manufactured by Canon, and would be fully compatible with the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Zoom Lens.

Q: 9. Is this lens good for high school basketball

A: If it is your only lens, you'll find it too short overall, BUT this focal length pairs nicely with a 70-200mm lens for wider angle images under the basket.

Q: 10. Is this compatable with Canon 60D?

A: Yes, the Canon EF-S 17-55mm lens is compatible with the Canon 60D.

I have a Canon 7D and this is my only lens. I love it. I'm new to DSLR's but this lens was definitely worth the money. I'm glad I didn't decide to grab something cheaper, this guy will certainly last me a while. It's heavy, but I wouldn't count that among the cons.

I recomend this lens above the cheap ones. Its faster and nearly cero aberations. Also less time working in photoshop. The Depth of Field works very good and pictures are sharp. I would it love it to have more range in this lens, like 17-105mm.

This lens rocks my socks. Perfect pairing for a 7D. Wished it was sealed a little better like the L lenses I have but all in all I love it. Having a nice wide 2.8 with the ability to zoom to 55 is just heaven. This is the lens that stays on my 7D 90% of the time.

I sold my 24-70/2.8L to buy this lens. I loved that lens and the length was great with a crop sensor but it was just never wide enough. I was skeptical about losing the L designation with this lens and it is not built quite as rugged but I am very satisfied. Incredibly shard and the wide end is so much better on my 60D. Also a great video lens.

This lens lives on my T2i most of the time. With the 2.8 aperture, it's really hard to take a bad picture indoors or outdoors. Everything comes out crisp, sharp and clear. The only real downside is that compared to my 55-250mm lens, it's very heavy. But it's well worth it for the picture output. I love this lens!
