A super telephoto distinguished by its fast design, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/2.8G ED VR II is further characterized by its advanced optical layout, fast focusing, and image stabilization. Well-suited for sports and wildlife photography, the bright f/2.8 maximum aperture suits working in a variety of lighting conditions and also promotes working with shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques. The optical design includes three extra-low dispersion elements, which help to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing in order to gain higher clarity and color accuracy. Both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have also been applied to reduce flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color rendering. Complementing the optics, this lens also sports a Silent Wave Motor for fast and accurate autofocus along with VR II image stabilization to minimize the appearance of camera shake by three stops.

Super telephoto prime is designed for FX-format F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it will provide a 450mm equivalent focal length.

Impressively bright f/2.8 maximum aperture excels in difficult lighting conditions and also enables extensive control over depth of field for isolating subjects using selective focus techniques.

Three extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.

Both a Nano Crystal Coat and a Super Integrated Coating have been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.

Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.

VR II (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by three stops to benefit shooting handheld in difficult lighting conditions.

Removable, rotating tripod collar benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Compatible with optional AF-S Teleconverter TC-14, TC-17, and TC-20 teleconverters.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this lens work with the Nikon TC-14EII teleconverter on a D7100?

A: The Nikon AF-S 300mm f/2.8 VR II is compatible with the TC-14E II without limitations, and they could be used together on the D7100.

Q: 2. Will this lens fit in the Nikon CL-L1 case?

A: Yes this lens fits in the CL-L1.

Q: 3. Does this item come with a lens good?

A: Yes, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens comes with the Nikon HK-30 Lens Hood (Slip-On) for 200-400mm f/4 & 300mm f/2.8 VR Lenses.

Q: 4. Can a third party 52mm filter be used on this lens?

A: I have not bought any filters for this lens. If you have a $5,500 lens, why try to save money by buying another filter that may not work, and could damage the lens? Good luck with this great lens.

Q: 5. Does this lens have internal focusing, IF?

A: Yes.

Q: 6. how long is the warranty on this lens?

A: The unit comes with the following. Limited 1-Year Warranty you can also extended it by taking advantage of our all-state protection plan.

Q: 7. What are the differences between version VR I and version VR II of this lens?

A: The NIKKOR 300mm f/2.8G ED VR II lens has one stop more of VR stabilization than the previous VR I, and the M/A autofocus mode was added.

Q: 8. How does one protect the front element of this lens if there is no provision for a screw in UV filter?

A: Hi John. The Nikkor 300mm f2.8 lens is quite large at the distal end 5 to 6 inches in diameter, too large for a screw on UV protective filter like I use on my other lenses. Nikon includes a lens shroud to put at the end of the lens which keeps out most foreign objects but does not protect from dust or from directly touching the lens. When not in use you can store the lens in its Nikon included case or leave it on your camera in a bag big enough to accommodate it like a PortaBrace bag that has lots of protective padding. Hope this helps. Matt

Q: 9. Will this mount on a Nikkon D90 camera? Are there accessories to convert to 400 mm or 600 mm?

A: The Nikon AF-S 300mm f/2.8 is fully compatible with the Nikon D90. The lens would also be compatible with the Nikon TC-14E II 1.4X (B&H # NITC14E2), TC-17E II 1.7X (B&H # NITC17E2), and TC-20E III 2X teleconverters (NITC20E3).

Q: 10. Is this lens compatible with the Nikon Z9?

A: This lens is compatible with the Z9 but you'll need the FTZ II adapter. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1669887-REG/nikon_niftz2_ftz_ii_mount_adapter.html?sts=pi

Amazing sharpness, even in low light! Fast focus! Purchased for shooting sports. So far have only gotten to shoot baseball, but will be using for football, soccer, volleyball and dance as well. Shot with a 80-200mm 2.8 for years and finally made the purchase. A lot of $, but well worth the extra reach!

I love the fast focusing this lens brings, and the sharp, crisp results from corner to corner. I am so glad I finally made the leap and purchased it.

This lens is a huge upgrade from my older AF 300 f/4.0. The AF-S focusing is much faster, and the ability to instantly overide to manual is very nice. The extra stop really comes in handy when using a teleconverter (I got the 1.7x to go with this lens, it works great). Granted, it is a bit heavier to carry around, but after a few long days at the San Diego Zoo, I'm getting used to it. I'm not going to check heavy as a con, since this much weight just goes with the size.

I use this lens for sports and events and the AF seems to be very quick and right on the money. I don't know if it's my imagination or not, but sometimes it seems like it focuses BEHIND the sensor or focal point buy a few inches at like 30 yds. But I'd say 95% of the time it's right on the money. It could be it encountering solid colors ? ... I Need more time with it since I just got it. I was very sorry to read the other review posted here concerning infinity focus and the five camera bodies needing work ...wow, what a nightmare. I own two D-4s and a D750 and they all do great! That 750 is a great little camera, so light weight and easy to grip... anyway ... To me this 300mm F2.8 is a small, manageable, very quick lens on a monopod, but then Im a big guy. (I used to use the 400mm f2.8 and the 600mm f4) I Have only used the VR a few times and it seems like it takes about a second for it to kick in after I hold down the shutter release ... but wow! it holds it absolutely still ... amazing. So I can probably stop using the monopod soon. All in all, a beautiful lens Im glad I bought. Sharp images and fast AF.

I love this lens! Sharp as a tack and amazing, beautiful bokeh separates your subject so well.
I have years of experience with it, having rented it at least 15 times over the years. BandH took care of me and I was very happy with a perfect sample that needs no fine tune adjustment on my D500. I shoot whales, which is very challenging in many ways. This was my last puzzle piece to having my perfect kit. I feel like a 6 year old on Christmas morning. Going to Maui for real test in a few more days.

Amazing in every way. I use this with all three TC's 1.4,1.7 & 2.0. The 2.0 does a great job at making this a very usable 600mm f5.6

Using this lens on both a Z7 and an 850. Outstanding quality. Heavy but that's part of the price you pay.

I am absolutely in love with this lens. I have been renting this lens for a number of years for events and this year I began winning awards for photos shot with this lens and received my first cover photo on a national magazine with it. Its my all-time favorite long lens for what I shoot.
