Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. It says it comes with an eSATA cable but the picture doesn't show an eSATA port. Is there one?

A: This appears to be a web error. Thank you for pointing it out. I have sent it in for correction. There is no eSata.

Q: 2. Where's the fan sound? Ive been using this unit for 3 days and feels a little hot, but the fan doesnt start. Also I connected my 2nd display to the TB port of this unit and doesn't work... Am I missing something?

A: Just turned on my 8TB G-RAID TB. There is a startup sound, then it has only a very faint sound, which I assume is the fan but I'm not really sure. I searched the G-Tech support pages but couldn't find anything specific to the G-RAID fan. There was something about another model, G-Safe, having a fan that only comes on when the drive overheats. But I don't know if that applies to the G-RAID too. I have a vague memory that my drive case sometimes feels a little warm and maybe reading somewhere that that's OK. But if yours feels really hot, you might want to just return it and ask to exchange it for another one. Also, do you have at least 4 inches of free space around all sides of the drive? I think that's supposed to be especially important in the rear, in terms of good ventilation.

Q: 3. Is the thunderbolt 1 or 2?

A: This is Thunderbolt 1...but it is very fast.

Q: 4. Hi Guys, does this drive show up as 2 drives on the desktop ? My Pro Tools software requires two seperate drives, one for video and one for audio. Thanks

A: Hi, as mentioned above out of the box the G-RAID is set up as RAID 0 and will be seen as one drive. You can delete the RAID in Disk Utility, creating a JBOD, and then format each drive individually. (Call one Audio, and one Video.)If you are running El Capitan the drives will appear as individual drives in Disk Utility and you will be able to format each drive to create your Audio and Video drive.

Q: 5. Besides cost, is there any reason for buying this set up as opposed to this?: a href= http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/858463-REG/G_Technology_0G02272_8TB_G_RAID_External_Hard.html target= _blank http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/858463-REG/G_Technology_0G02272_8TB_G_RAID_External_Hard.html/a

Q: 6. Does this need to be plugged into a computer at all times? I want to use it with my laptop and still be able to take my laptop wherever I want.

A: I am traveling for work as we speak, and brought my GRAID and my MacBook Pro with me. Very portable.

Q: 7. can you please assist me with required voltage for power supply(cord)?

A: 110 volts

Q: 8. Can you swap out drives with this unit? Meaning, could I buy other drives and remove the others if they filled up?

A: check out the g-technology website, they have a FAQ section.

Q: 9. Can this be used for a Time Machine backup?

A: EThis system really helped me in my work. I am a professional journalist and radio presenter. including music. I have a huge music archive and without this device it was very difficult to work with.nter an answer to this question.

Q: 10. Can this unit be connected to my 4TB G-Technology 4/4000 in order to expand my total storage to 8TB?

A: If your current drive has firewire it can be daisy chained. It will appear as a separate drive though.

During production work and video editing that go on for hours/days, having a reliable, quiet / non-obtrusive hard drive is hugely appreciated.

drives are always a bit of a roll of the dice (or a box of chocolates). The G-drives are probably as reliable as you're ever goona get and very mac-cenrtic with no need to format, just plug 'n play. Nice.

I bought this RAID drive to use for an editorial session that needed to happen on location at a shoot. I was expecting a normal size drive, but I was pleasantly surprised that this drive is very compact. It's the same rugged metal housing as the larger drives, but just a smaller version which works out since when I'm mobile space it usually at a premium. It worked wonderfully for this application and I will continue to use this drive on mobile gigs in the future. It's much faster than single drive non raid units and the speed was definitely appreciated both while editing and especially when Exporting. A colleague was using a single drive and I was able to cut his Export times in half because of the increase in speed. I wouldn't use this as my only hard drive for editing, but for mobile use I give this two thumbs way up!

The transfer speeds are wonderful. Firewire wasn't cutting it anymore as my video projects stacked up. Also works great as a Time Machine.

I use this as an external (vary large) iTunes library with a mac mini (my own media server). Works great, and an addition to my large family of G Tech drives

I use this as an extrenal video drive with Adobe Preimre 5.0 and it is a beast. Holds tons of high definition video and does not hang up with some of my most difficult projects. I wish the e-sata connectors were more durable, this isn't a problem on this unit alone but all e-sata connectors.

My Lacie 4big Quadro just wasn't hacking it anymore. My daily backups were taking forever and my G-RAID was waiting constantly on the Lacie. So I bought my second G-RAID, this was specifically for backup. These things are rock solid, very fast, you can easily stack them on top of each other. One caution, they do not have the variety of inputs you recieve on the Lacie 4big Quadro, so make sure the G-RAID offers the inputs you require. Don't worry that they seem to promote themselves as a MAC platform, a very quick format and you are good to go on a Windows computer.
