Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I heard that when this came out it did not fit into 4 x 5 film holders and had to be trimmed. Has this been corrected and it does fit or does it still need to be trimed?

A: Some people don't have issues and some do. It's probably a combination of different holders and a little bit of user error, hope nobody gets insulted. It seems that with some extra force the sheets should slide in. The best thing is to waste a sheet to see if the width, length or thickness is the culprit and adjust accordingly.

Q: 2. Can you leave this paper after exposing in the fridge for a period of time before developing? Not near a darkroom

A: You can hold off processing the HARMAN technology Direct Positive Fiber Based (FB) Paper (Glossy, 4 x 5", 25 Sheets). But do not do that for long times. It is best to process right away but you can wait a few days or so.

Q: 3. What is the gsm of this paper?

A: Our information shows a 235 gsm for FOMA double weight paper.

Q: 4. This paper is 180gsm or 280 gsm?

A: The Fomatone MG Classic 131 VC FB Paper is 180 gsm.

Q: 5. If loading in darkness, is there a notch like regular 4x5 for loading. If not, is there a way to tell?

A: There are no notches. This paper can be loaded with darkroom safely light or in complete darkness the glossy side up.

Q: 6. Can this be developed using cafenol?

A: While cafenol is not listed, this paper has been developed in most any developer known. This is a very experimental paper so try it and see.

Q: 7. Is this available in luster?

A: Unfortunately, this paper is currently available only in glossy and emulsion-in.

Q: 8. Can I use Ilford WASHAID to shorten the rinse time from 1 hour? I'm using Ilford DEV, STP, & FIX.. in trays

A: Yes, Wash Aid will help reduce wash time with the Harman Direct Positive paper.

Q: 9. Can I use this paper for pinhole cameras without preflashing it ? How would be the results if not preflashed ?

A: Yes you can use this paper without a pre-flash with a pinhole camera, but it will be more contrasty due to the long exposure and relative slow ISO (I think around 7). You'll get more tonality with a pre-flash. One thing about this paper is YOU CANNOT handle it under amber safelight.

Q: 10. how long for per roll?

A: I've not bought any rolls; only sheets. This item appears to be 66' though.

I really enjoy using this paper. I did a test strip and noticed that it was very forgiving in terms of what was acceptable and in range for a good print. It is a little soft, maybe not as punchy as the Ilford alternative, but I also didn't use any filters. Its a glossy finish but not overkill. Prints curled a bit when dried face up and less when dried face down. I really like the results I got from this paper and happily rate it 5/5. I have posted some example prints.. photos taken using a sp500 and Takumar 55 f2, prints made using a Rodagon 80mm enlarging lens and intrepid enlarging kit.

This is an outstanding graded photographic paper. This paper outshines any brand of variable contrast paper. Please continue making and selling this product.

I've been printing everything on Ilford's MGFB Classic paper since it was released--another excellent paper. After reading some promising reviews of Fomabrom, I thought to give it a try.
Developed in LPD 1:3, Fomabrom renders slightly warm. It's a bit yellow, better than old MGFB, not as nice as untoned MGFBClassic. It sounds unappealing, but it's not. It's just not neutral.
Toned for 5 minutes in 1:30 selenium, the paper quickly cools to neutral. A really pure neutral silver tone. It tones better than MGFB. If you like toning, you'll love this paper. Blacks are surprisingly deep, and the print becomes dimensional in a way I haven't seen before.
The other distinctive characteristic of this paper is the way it handles highlight detail. High-key negatives are much easier to print than on MGFB. I'd say it has less contrast except that it prints at about the same grade as MGFB. Highlights are just easier to manage.
The downside is that midtones have less separation than MGFB. MGFB just seems to pop more in the mids.
It's an excellent paper to have on hand, especially for high-key negatives or images you intend to tone. Maybe more like the old Oriental variable-contrast paper than MGFB. At this time, the price also makes it an appealing general alternative to MGFB Classic.

I needed a box of 100 sheets of B & W RC photo paper for a lab class I was conducting for some Girl Scouts. With less than a week until the class, I went on line and could find none of the B & W papers I had been familiar, and/or satisfied with for 40 years. Finally, I purchased an unknown (to me) brand. The day of the class, I found this paper to be of the highest quality in every respect. I had no problems at all, and the paper produced exceptionally high quality prints. Now that I have found FOMASPEED brand, I can remain in film darkroom work for a while longer.
