The RND Portico 5043 from Steinberg is a high-end compressor plug-in based on the renowned Portico 5043 hardware unit. Yamaha's VCM technology allows the plug-in to exactly reproduce the analog punch, warmth, and clarity of the original hardware, leading to exclusive approval by Rupert Neve.

The plug-in provides control over five essential parameters - threshold, ratio, attack, release and gain. Although a minimalistic approach, it allows the user to focus purely on the sound that needs to be processed, without the need to deal with dozens of parameters to get the signature Neve sound.

Two modes are available - Feed-Forward and Feed-Back compression. These modes provide two entirely different characteristics, where the Feed-Back mode is more musical and sweeter, while the Feed-Forward mode works with greater accuracy.

Two LED metering displays show input level signal and the amount of gain reduction. Another signal LED shows whether a signal is currently being processed. The RND Portico 5033 is available in VST 3, VST 2.4 and Audio Units plug-in format, allowing for multi-instance use with digital audio applications such as Cubase, Nuendo, WaveLab and Logic.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does using the TRS inputs bypass the pre-amps? If we want to use another pre-amp.

A: While not specified by Steinberg, the TRS input will likely pass through the built in pre-amp on the way to converting.

Q: 2. I've seen reviews say that this doesn't come with a power supply. Is that true?

A: This interface comes with a power supply.

Q: 3. can't decide between this product and Steinberg UR22MKII?

A: The Steinberg UR242 and UR22mkII are two great interfaces for budget-minded shoppers. The main difference is one has 4 inputs and the other has 2. If you're looking to record two vocals and a stereo instrument, go with the UR242. If you are planning on overdubbing everything, the UR22mkII will suffice.

Q: 4. When i connect to computer . The light indicator of the usb shows me on/off,on/off ... . Not stable. What is the reason?

A: Not all USB cables are the same. You might try several brands or styles before you find one that works consistently. In general, I find that USB C to USB micro or mini cables tend to not work, or worse, work for a while then lock up with a SoundDesign MixPre 10. According to their tech, USB cables need pull-up resistors to work properly. Maybe true for Steinberg I/O too.

Q: 5. Is it Mac compatible?

A: Steinberg's website states the UR-RT2 audio interfaces provide cross-platform compatibility for Windows, macOS, and iOS with the included Cubase AI and Cubasis LE music software but doesn't specific what macOS versions are supported apart from its minimum specs. https://www.steinberg.net/en/products/audio_interfaces/ur_rt_series/resources.html

Q: 6. Does this unit has De-esser functions?

A: No

Q: 7. Can this be used to compress audio from drum mics in live recording?

A: At this time, that spec is not provided by the manufacturer.

Q: 9. Can the Steinberg UR22mkII function as a standalone mic preamp?

A: Unfortunately not, this device is an audio interface, it does not works without a computer connection.

Q: 10. Does B&H carry a 5 volt power supply using the USB a/b jack?
