The plug-in receiver with the built-in 1/4" jack is only needed if you want to connect the mic to a sound system (audio mixer or amplifier for performance or to connect it to an audio recorder). Essentially, this SingAndHear-Solo provides two wireless systems in one package -- one system for performance (to hear the mic coming through a sound system) and a separate monitoring system for headphones.
