The black 3.5" USB 3.0 SATA III External Hard Drive Enclosure with UASP from StarTech lets you connect a 3.5" SATA III hard drive (HDD) through an available USB port. The enclosure delivers optimal performance with a USB 3.0 connection and is backwards compatible with USB 2.0/1.1 host connections.

Enhanced with USB Attached SCSI Protocol (UASP), this 3.5" SATA III enclosure performs up to 70% faster than conventional USB 3.0 when paired with a UASP-enabled host controller. A: Be sure the SSD is properly attached, open disk utility to view all connected devices check if formatting is an issue. Also check the drive on other units to see if it's a issue only on one machine, or if it could be the drive itself.

Q: 10. Does it need external power?

A: This one has an external power adapter supplied with the casing as well as a special USB3 cable (which is USB 2 compatible).

I've used the enclosures only with USB 2, but Windows 10 sees them as USB 3 UASP. They are well made and the connectors line up precisely with those on my HDDs. No complaints. 5

I bought this to house a Seagate 4 TB HDD for Windows backups. What I really like about this enclosure is the slip-on wide-footed plastic base that wraps around the thickness of the enclosure. This allows for a much more stable piece of gear being less likely to be knocked over sideways. And yes, I have knocked over other external backup drive products that only have tiny rubber pads inboard of the bottom of their drive cases. This StarTech enclosure rates high in my opinion because of the inclusion of the wide-footed base with the product; I would recommend it for anyone planning to build an external HDD solution. I would buy this product again from B&H Photo Video. 5

I have had Startech enclosures in the past (which all still work btw), but this one is not only looking high end, it really is. I bought one not long ago for my backup data and was very pleased with it so I bought two more for my Images and my Music/Video collection. What I love is if the drives are disconnected software wise from the computer they go in a state of standby. I have my three drives hook up via a switchable USB hub which is connected to my computer. push the button on the switch and the chosen one comes back to life again. I am very happy with my purchase and the silver design makes it look very elegant (little eye candy).. 5

This is a quality piece, and is easy to put together, and I recommend it. My only very minor gripe is that it would be nice if the two different sized screws that are used for assembly were separated and identified - they are so small it's hard to tell the difference between the two and i fumbled around a little bit figuring out which screw goes where. 5
