The Tiffen 86mm Low Contrast 2 Filter can be applied to purposely reduce contrast while photographing an image or while recording video. By redistributing illumination from brighter to darker areas within a scene, this filter is useful in helping to balance the tonal range among highlights and shadows. Detail is increased within shadow regions while a halation effect around highlights is created which can further enhance a scene's appearance or produce a desired effect.

This filter has a grade of 2. Grades of 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, 3, 4, and 5 are also available where this filter type's effect becomes approximately twice as strong with each grade number increase.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch.

Q: 2. How do I decide what strength to use? Is it based on the contrast ratio? The total amount of sun? The kind of camera? Which one should I pick?

A: Richard, the higher the number, the stronger the effect. The selection of strength is personal preference.

Q: 3. Can this be use in combination with the Tiffen Digital Diffusion FX?

A: Being that this filter has front threads measuring 82mm, you can stack a Tiffen Digital Diffusion FX Filter on top. However, vignetting may occur if the lens has a wide angle focal length.

Q: 4. What size are this? mm

A: This is an internal lens filter for size Filter Wheel 1 which is 28mm in diameter.

Q: 5. Can you add another 82 filter in front of it? Does it have thread in the front?

A: Yes, this filter has front filter threads and you can add another filter to the front. The only issue would be the potential for vignetting if you are shooting wide angle on a full frame sensor camera when stacking filters.

Q: 6. Will this 77mm filter fit onto the Canon RF 70-200mm f2.8 lens with the supplied Canon lens hood attached?

A: Yes, the Tiffen 77mm Low-Profile Design Circular Polarizer will fit without obstruction from the RF 70-200mm f/2.8 lens hood. The lens hood has a filter window that you may open to spin the circular polarizer.

Q: 7. Was wondering if this particular filter would work with the 18-55mm wide angle lens on the Canon T3?

Q: 8. Does this work well on the Milky Way?

A: It helps to remove some light pollutions from the sky

Q: 9. will this work with a canon 18-135mm lens?

A: It is the right size for your lens but if you use it at the widest angle you'll get some vignetting where the edge of the filter will appear as a dark shadow in the outer corners of the image. It won't be a problem at longer focal lengths. This is tolerable if you can crop these corners in post production. This filter will really raise the quality of light and colour in your landscapes.

Q: 10. Would this fit the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens for Canon EF?

A: It will work with a step up ring but you can get one that is 72mm to fit directly.

Love this filter to bring up the shadows and make the highlights glow. Don’t think that “1” is too strong.
