The DX-format 20.9MP CMOS sensor is paired with the EXPEED 5 image processor to provide an esteemed mixture of high sensitivity, nuanced image quality, and fast overall performance. At native values, a sensitivity range from ISO 100-51200 permits working in a broad array of lighting conditions, an can be further expanded to ISO 50-1640000 (Lo 1 to Hi 5) to handle the most challenging of situations. As with still shooting, the wide range of sensitivities is available for recording in low- and bright-light conditions, ranging from expanded ISO 100-1640000, and sensitivity values are manually adjustable via the dedicated movie-shooting menu. Also, a video-optimized Flat Picture Control mode can be used during recording to flatten the overall contrast curve for more control during post-production and color grading.
Benefitting handheld shooting, an Electronic Vibration Reduction feature can be used during Full HD and HD recording, which minimizes the appearance of camera shake across three axes to control horizontal, vertical, and rotational movements. Additionally, Active D-Lighting can also be employed during Full HD/HD shooting to preserve highlight and shadow detail when working in high-contrast situations.
In regard to handling, a dedicated power aperture button (Pv) makes it possible to achieve smooth, continuous exposure transitions when switching from light to dark areas and Auto ISO can also be used to maintain consistent brightness when working in changing light situations. Matching the speed and imaging capabilities is the apt Multi-CAM 20K AF system, which features 153 total phase-detection points, including 99 cross-type sensors for improved subject recognition, and 55 of the points are selectable for greater compositional freedom. Q: 1. How does the image quality of this camera compare to the D5 and D810? I like this camera for the extra reach and tracking, but am afraid I will lose the image quality of and FX sensor. I am not sure at what size it becomes noticeable.
A: I was on safari in Africa in August 2016. Are used both a D810 and a D 500 with a F4for 500 mm lens for birds. I can't tell the difference between the 810 and the 500 as far as sharpness color saturation. If you need the extra reach I would go for the D 500. And while I photography it's also nice to be able to shoot 10 frames a second with the D500

I'm really hesitant wether to get the d750 with the new sigma 24-70 art and the tamron 70-200 g2 or the this camera with the sigma 18-35 and the 50-100.I will be primarily shooting portraits and landscapes and occasionally some sports (inline speed skating) .I'd also appreciate the 4k recording of the d500.
A: I have the D500 and Sigma 18-35. Both are top notch in my opinion. The focus speed and accuracy of the D500 is far better than any of the other Nikon bodies that I have used. The Sigma 18-35 is very sharp and has a solid build. My main interest with the D500 is for bird photography using a Sigma 150-600. My wife also has a D500 with Nikon 80-400 also for bird photography. I have photographed flowers with the D500. In live view, the screen responds to touch for focusing. Thus you can touch the screen where you want to focus on the flower and it does it very accurately. I have never owned a FX camera so cannot comment on that.

A: The front of the D500 is carbon fiber / plastic, but that doesn't mean it's design is less strong than an all Mg body. Nikon wanted to include wireless and blue tooth, an all metal body would of prevented those features. Carbon fiber can be stronger than many alloys, and Nikon states they didn't compromise on ruggedness.
Q: 7. How many minutes will the camera record video in 4k using a 64gig card?
A: According to the D500 manual: Each movie will be recorded across up to 8 files of up to 4 GB each. The number of files and the length of each file vary with the options selected for Frame size/Frame rate and Movie quality. Based on that a 64 GB card should hold close to 1 hour of video.
Q: 8. I own a D7000 and have had it for about 5 years. It has suited my needs pretty well but it definitely shows its age in low light. I have a Sigma 17-70 2.8, Sigma 70-200 2.8, and a Nikon 18-200. I'm looking to upgrade to shoot sports (mostly high school level), video, and family/street events. Any recommendations for/against the D500? Worth the extra cash without investing in new glass?
A: Because you are looking to upgrade the speed and performance in your photography that would definitely suggest that you upgrade your camera body, and the Nikon D500 camera is designed for exactly what you're looking to shoot. It would be one of the best recommendations for shooting sports, video, events and family. You could bring your lenses with you to the new camera and see a substantial upgrade to your responsiveness and autofocus speeds.

A: Hi Ben, it looks like a lot of very good suggestions/options have been posted before my answer. So, to elaborate further I concur on getting better glass to go with whatever body you choose. (Always try to shoot with good glass) as for the d7100-d7200 choice, go with the d7200. I would not bother with the d7500 upgrade since you can save more money with the other choice i own the d7100 and it was a good camera when it released and still is but once i got the d500 i have not used. (d7200 has some better updates & low light abilities over the d7100) The d500 is an amazing camera and you will definitely be able to shoot with it for years and not out grow it! I shoot basically same subjects as you but alter between d810 FF for landscapes & portrait and d500 for wildlife/birds and dog images (phodography) but the d500 can do all subjects obviously as will the d7200 - if you can find a clean used d7200 at b&h that could be good to save $$. IF money is not a factor then go big w/d500 but only if that includes some good glass! I would recommend 200-500mm f5.6 or 300mm f/4 PF ED VR lens, the newest one which is incredible and small/lightweight or even the older version 300mm but bigger/heavier and no IS - you may find some decent prices on these lenses in the used dept as well. The d500 is a high speed,fast focusing/tracking/buffering,low light demon! The other cameras mentioned get the job done but not as quickly- the image quality from all 3 is excellent. A: Nikon does not ship their cameras with the batteries included. The Nikon EN-EL15 Lithium-Ion Battery (1900mAh) included in the camera kit would be in its own plastic packaging, not inside the camera. On receipt, you would have to remove the battery and the battery charger, and it is recommended to fully charge the battery before placing the battery in the camera for usage.
