Add the speed and storage capabilities of RAID, Thunderbolt 2, and USB 3.0 to your Mac and Windows systems using the G-RAID 20TB 2-Bay Thunderbolt 2 RAID Array from G-Technology. This array features two SATA III 6 Gb/s drive bays, each of which holds one removable 10TB enterprise-class hard drive, for a total capacity of 20TB. The drives have a rotational speed of 7200 rpm and are configured in a RAID 0 array. Moreover, this G-RAID is outfitted with one USB 3.0 port along with two Thunderbolt 2 ports, which deliver daisy-chaining capabilities.

This G-RAID features an internal RAID controller which supports hardware RAID 0 (optimized for performance), RAID 1 (optimized for 1:1 data redundancy), or JBOD, with data transfer rates of up to 480 MB/s. This will allow users to access, browse, edit, and backup their digital library. It is well suited for demanding creative projects, such as those involving HD, 2K, and compressed 4K workflows. In addition, it may also be used for storage-intensive applications, such as audio editing, digital photography, music libraries, data backup, and more. This array uses a smart cooling fan to help ensure quiet operation, a long life, and data reliability, as well as an all-aluminum enclosure to help increase its durability.

While this G-RAID is compatible with both Mac and Windows, it comes pre-formatted HFS+ with Journaling for Mac OS 10.9 and later. It may also be reformatted for Windows and is compatible with Windows 10, 8.1, and 7. Included with this storage array are two Thunderbolt cables, a USB 3.0 cable, a power cable, and an AC power adapter. Protection is provided by a limited 3-year warranty.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Where is the USB 3.0 port? I don't see one in the photos. Just want to double check. Thanks!

A: I just received mine last week. The USB 3.0 port is on the back next to the Thunderbolt ports. It's there :)

Q: 2. Does this system work w an 27" Imac late 2013?

A: Yes, the G-Technology G-RAID 8TB 2-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array (2 x 4TB) BH #GT0G05748 works with a 27'' iMac Late 2013. You can use the included USB Type-C to Type-A Cable. If you prefer using Thunderbolt, you will need these two items: Apple Thunderbolt 3 Male to Thunderbolt 2 Female Adapter BH #APMMEL2AMA Apple Thunderbolt Cable (6.6') BH #APTBC2M

Q: 3. Does this come with pre installed drives or will I need to buy that separately?

A: They are pre-installed. It's plug and play essentially.

Q: 4. Any real downsides to running the drive as JOBD, using software like carbon copy to use the second drive as a clone and backup daily? In JOBD, does my computer recognize two drives on the desktop? Im kinda paranoid running RAID 1 because if the RAID controller gets damaged or something, itll cost thousands to recover my data. I know its unlikely, but this company doesnt offer data recovery with their warranty, theyll just give you a new unit. If I run JOBD, I ASSUME I could swap one of the drives into a standard controller/housing and recover my data?

A: I assume you could do as you say, running it as JBOD and using CCC to back-up but you face the issue of having only a single copy of the data for up to a day (until your scheduled back-up runs).Running RAID 1 gives you 'immediate' mirroring to protect your data against a hard disk failure. What is more likely to fail? The hard disk or the RAID controller? If you want to do JBOD, you are paying a lot of extra money for this unit and wouldn't be getting maximum value out of it. I ran it as RAID 1, so i took advantage of what the drive offers, and used CCC to back that up to another single hard drive for 'backup'.

Q: 5. does hdmi support 10bit 2560*1440 display?

A: Yes

Q: 6. Can this be connected to a Thunderbolt 2 port?

A: Yes, but you would need a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter.

Q: 7. If using this item on iMac, can the USB C port be used to power a MacBook Pro USB C?

A: It depends on power requirements. Did NOT work for the new MacBook Pro 16”. I tried this with a thunderbolt 3 cable...no go. I’d call tech support...in India...if that’s a deal breaker for you. I’ve heard the new Promise drives can power a more powerful monitor as they were made for the new Mac Pro.

Q: 8. Just received this external drive and it doesn't work. Message says it cannot be read! Is there a fix ... or should I just return it?

A: Not sure if you are Mac or PC, but,I just connected mine via USB to my Mac desktop, and it showed and accepted data with no formatting or issues. I would return it. Even if you can figure out a work-around or fix, seems like a price point where you would want it to work out of the box, or at least be given instructions by G-Raid as to the booting process...

Q: 9. Can multiple computers be connected and using at the same time?

A: This drive can only be attached to one computer at a time.

Q: 10. Are the hard drives included in the unit?

A: Yes. Dual 10TB 7200 rpm enterprise-class hard drives are included.

Running this bad boy in RAID1 to back up all my photos automatically. Never slept easier than knowing the last several years of work are duplicated and not sitting on a single drive.

I wanted a local storage solution for our Photo Archives even though we have networked and cloud-based servers. With its mirrored RAID configuration I'm confident we won't lose any images. The Thunderbolt interface is fast and having USB 3.0 makes it flexible. A while back we had our company servers (and backup servers) crash and would have lost 15-20 years worth of images if it hadn't been for our local archives. So I kind of swear by these now.

This is the fifth G-Technology RAID drive we have purchased for our video production company- they are tanks that just keep on running without a problem plus saved a ton of money on it from B&H.

Using it for Mac Photos and I have it mirrored, don't notice any slow down in performance (actually I think its a little faster than having the photos on my HDD). I invested in this thing so I won't have to buy another drive for like 10 years hopefully.... oh and the HDMI out gives me another monitor which is super neato and don't forget you can change TB3 devices.

Honestly not much to review here, you knows its fast, you know its capacity, it's a sturdy enclosure, and it has two bays... the real reason to spend the extra moola is for a super fast drive that is nigh indestructible.

If looks could kill... this drive wouldn't make you sleep with the fishes but it still looks nice. If you want to be picky, the aluminum finish is too rough to perfectly match the Mac and also the G on the front is bright enough to light up a runway for night-time jet landings but I put a sock on it and life is good again. Buy this drive and you will be happy, if you find something else that makes you happy then do that too.

So far so good. Own several G-Tech drives but this guy should hold me over for quite some time.
