Q: 5. Would you explain the difference between the Leica 8X42 ultravid and the 8X42 noctivid? Are either armored?

A: The Ultravid HD-Plus is indeed based on an older mechanical and optical design that has been around for a long time. Its a true and tested performer. The Noctivid is Leica's newest optical and mechanical designs which many individuals at Leica Camera, Inc, worked on for over 6 years before introducing. It shows numerous easily noticeable improvements in performance over not only our existing Ultravid designs, but arguably has been referred to as the new performance benchmark for all. The Ultravid line is complete with 8 different models of full sized binoculars in 32 mm, 42 mm, and 50 mm objective lens models, while the Noctivid is only available in 8x42 and 10x42 models. Comparing apples to apples between the Leica 8x42 Ultravid HD-Plus, and the Leica 8x42 Noctivid binoculars, one immediately appreciates the Noctivids closer focus (almost 5 feet closer than the Ultravid product, down to near 6 feet) as well as the Noctivid's very obvious wider field-of-view (443 feet versus 389 feet at 1,000 yards). Especially when comparing in challenging lighting, the Noctivids superior light delivery is easily demonstrable and since delivered at very high transmission across the entire visible spectrum, the Noctivids high dynamic range lends itself to a seemingly unparalleled depth of focus front to back that offers amazing eye comfort. This feature also lends itself to a very quick focus system. With so much of the field from 50 feet to infinity in focus or near focus so at once, most users find they barely have to refocus and adjustments being made are mere degrees on the focus wheel. This means you are spending more time appreciating your subject in focus and less time trying to get the subject in focus.

These feel really good in my hands. I can see backlit birds much better than with my old binocs. I like the lens caps as I am less likely to lose them. Case and straps are good too.

Excellent binoculars with awesome light-gathering capabilities, perfect for bird-watching even in low light areas like forest canopies. The lower weight is a bonus and, though only 8x42, it is way better than the 10x50 I was using earlier. Fantastic value for money

I bought these for birding and landscaping in low light conditions, and they have not disappointed. Nice bright clear images in wider angle than my Vortex Diamondback 8x32s (a neat little powerhouse of a bino in its own right). They are especially good on dismal rainy days. l also appreciate the Mg chassis, a sweet touch at this price point. l love the extra heft and feel of the metal under the tightly fitting rubber armor. I recommend these, with the understanding that they are not Alpha binos and are not intended to be.

The view is sharp and very bright. I find them very easy to use. Comes with a stout canvas case plus a neck strap and a 'chest harness,' all pretty good quality. They are regular size and regular weight binoculars, despite being straight design. (These are not opera glasses.) I like the weird lens caps and I see no fringing or chromatic aberration. If that's what you're looking for then these are them. I found two others about the same size, weight, objective size, magnification, quality, price, etc. I chose the Vortex 8x42 over the others for no particular reason. I'd recommend these as very, very good.

Bought these for casual birdwatching and wildlife observation. Very good optics. Way better than any binoculars I have owned before. Seems to me to be right in the sweet spot in terms of quality and price for my purposes.

We ordered the Diamondback 8x42 and the Nikon Monarch 5 8x42 intending to keep one or both of them. I thought the Monarch would suit me better because of the increased eye relief since I wear glasses. We both experienced eye strain when using the Monarchs. This happened even though we adjusted the diopter for each person's right eye. We decided to return the Nikon Monarchs and get another Diamondback 8x42. The eye relief of the Diamondback works fine for me even with glasses. They are very good! Very crisp and clear. Excellent adjustments. After seeing the Diamondback, we don't see much if any difference between them and my wife's Vortex Viper 10x42. Sam, at B&H was a pleasure to deal with though out this whole transaction.

These binoculars have served me well over the past few months, birdwatching in forests and prairies of Iowa. Vortex has an excellent reputation for a Chinese-manufactured product, and I have to say that the quality of these has met my expectations. The carrying pack also keeps these binos very secure and simple to carry along. I wear it on cycling trips and can whip these out at a moments notice.

I'll attach a couple digibinned images of a rare egret in my area, needless to say I've been very impressed with the performance of these binoculars.
