Tiffen Combination 85/nd Filter (72mm, 1-stop)
  • Product Code: ga719
  • Availability: In Stock

$268.50 $330.25

This 72mm Tiffen Combination 85/ND Filter blends both an amber color conversion 85 and a 0.3 neutral density filter. The ND filtration provides a 1-stop exposure reduction for darkening the entire image in order to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The 85 filtration covers the entire filter plane and converts the color temperature to 3400K for use with type A (tungsten) film.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How to photograph lights at night to get the starburst look

A: The Tiffen 77mm Variable Neutral Density Filter is usually used to slow down the shutter speed or when using a wider aperture. For a star burst effect at night, a filter such as the Tiffen 77mm North Star Effect Filter is often used: https://bhpho.to/4cTxgSe.

Q: 2. Quiet operation? I am using the Hoya but you can hear it sliding when you adjust it. For video I need something that will adjust silently.

A: This filter would offer quiet operation.

Q: 3. What size lens cap do I need?. I have been told that a 82MM lens cap is the right size as the front portion of the filter is made bigger to insure the filter does not vignette.

A: The front thread on that filter is 86mm an 82mm is too small. The only type of cap that will work is a push on lens cap and in most cases it will be a bit looser than a regular snap on cap. This one should be about the best fit, a href= http://bhpho.to/1wBcCRN target= _blank http://bhpho.to/1wBcCRN./a

Q: 4. What size do i need for the Sony - E 55-210mm f/4.5-6.3 OSS E-Mount Lens (Silver) ?

A: I believe 77mm, but I don't own that lens -

Q: 5. Can I use this to photograph a total solar eclipse?

A: Yes

Q: 6. Normal 85b is reduced by 0.6 stops. This is normal 85b(0.6) + nd(0.3) product?? Or does the new technology mean that the 85b filter itself only reduces 0.3 stops?

A: No, the following filter blends both an amber color conversion 85B and a 0.3 neutral density filter.

Q: 7. Wil; this filter work with a Nikon 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 zoom lens ? Also, will I get the notorious X-pattern at 18mm?

A: The Tiffen 67mm Variable Neutral Density Filter is compatible with the Nikon 18-300mm f3.5-6.3 lens. The "X" pattern only occurs when the filter is rotated beyond the 8 stop range (beyond the limit for the filter).

Q: 8. Can this Tiffen 77mm Variable ND filter be stacked onto another nd filter to allow more stops while still using the variable? If so can someone add a link to a filter that would work underneath this one? I am trying to do slow exposure in bright sunlight and I cannot reach the desired results with this filter alone.

A: Not sure why you need another ND. This variable ND allows you to completely block all light even from full sunshine. I have this filter. Plus you never should stack these types of threaded filters as they can become permanently stuck. The threads are very thin.

Q: 9. Can I use this filter with step down rings for my other smaller 52mm, 58mm, 72mm lenses?

A: Tiffen's 77mm Variable ND filter can used on your smaller diameter lenses provided you have the appropriate stepping rings (ie - 52mm to 77mm, 58mm to 77mm, etc.)

Q: 10. Does this filter fit on 77mm Canon 24-105 f4/L? Or I should some other?

A: I think Canon 24-105 f4/L has 77mm filter thread. This filter should work.

Came promptly, appears sturdy/good quality... Only used few times but rotated smoothly and neutralized appropriately. Not sure that would use on its strongest settings but will have to experiment with that.

I have an entire Pelican 1500 case full of screw on filters, plus other cases for rectangular matte box filters. I've got some of everything, but I must say Tiffen is my most trusted brand. This 62mm variable ND was purchased for a specific lens, an Olympus Zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO. Filters can get expensive, so my standard configuration is 77mm filters. Each lens I purchase, I also buy a Lowe Pro lens case and a dedicated adapter ring so that a 77mm filter can be fitted. This is a good overall strategy especially for primes and lenses that I tend to use in a deliberate way. However, I will buy a dedicated filter for specific lenses that are mostly used in the heat of the moment when there is no time for rigging. The Olympus 12-40mm zoom is used exactly in this way, when I need something versatile to shoot documentary video with a Panasonic GH4 in uncontrolled conditions. Variable ND is essential for video in small DSLR and mirrorless cameras, so for this purpose having a dedicated filter for a single lens is important. Tiffen filters are quality made and inspire confidence. I have purchased much more expensive filters, and also less expensive, but Tiffen really hits the sweet spot with reliable quality for professional use without the extreme prices that some others command. For someone like me who has spent more on a filter collection than most people ever spend on all their photographic gear, I am not trying to cut corners and Tiffen allows me to have what I need on hand rather than a hit or miss collection of filters and a big wish list that I would never be able to afford. Note: Tiffen Variable ND filters have larger outside dimensions that the inner lens thread size. This is important to avoid vignetting because variable ND filters all consist of two filters in a single mount. Just be aware that this arrangement makes it difficult or impossible to use a factory lens hood.

For those of you who do not have this piece of gear may I suggest you do yourself a great favor and buy one. If you have blown out highlights then this is what you need. With this variable filter you can monitor how deep you need to go. I have found no negatives with this filter.

I use this product to make time exposures (long exposures) especially at the beach and lakes. The product is easy to use and is better than a neutral density filter that can't vary the f/stop degree. Just set it on the amount of F/stop you want to reduce and shoot. It couldn't be simpler.

This is a great tool, a must-have for anyone doing long exposures, or time lapse. It's like having 8 filters in one!

Although I have some other uses in mind, I used this product to slow the water flow in a small mountain canyon stream, I was very pleased with the results at various settings. This will become a very useful addition to my camera bag.

This is a very nice filter. Good quality and I like that I don't have to change different ND filters.
