The Tiffen 4 x 4" Linear Polarizer Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A linear polarizer differs from a circular polarizer in that it does not contain an additional quarter wave plane. The addition of a quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, in-camera auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

This filter is recommended when not using in-camera exposure metering or autofocus. It is non-coated and delivers approximately 40% average light transmission.

Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology; a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Thickness of the filter

A: 4mm

Q: 2. how is this designed to work? Does it need a 138mm circular polarizer in combination with this filter?

A: You would need a holder that will take this size filter. The exact holder depends in part on the lens you are using.

Q: 3. Will this work with the Wooden Camera Zip Box Pro 4.5in Round Filter Stage?

A: Yes.

Q: 4. So I was just curious does this come with any sort of case?

A: This filter comes in a hard plastic case.

Q: 5. Was this made for film or digital? Do you have to angle it slightly for digital?

A: The Tiffen 4 x 5.65" Ultra Pol Linear Polarizer Filter, being a linear polarizer, is not good for digital photography. For digital photography, you would want to use a circular polarizing filter. Here is a link to the circular polarizing filter options in the 4 x 5.65" size: https://bhpho.to/4dOpbz9.

Q: 6. Will I need to buy any kind of rotating adapter to drop this in? I have a matte box (on order) that states: 2 universal 360 degree rotating filter stages + 2 filter trays that support both 4x4 and 4x5.65 filter sizes

A: Which matte box did you purchase? Does it accept 138mm filters?

Q: 7. Will a linear polarizer affect the AF system of my Sony a7iii?

A: We recommend a Circular Polarizing filter for autofocus cameras

Q: 8. What is the difference between Ultra Pol Circular vs Ultra pol LINEAR? Which one will work best in my matte Shape-2 4x4 case and with my Sony A7SII?

A: Circular Polarizers are designed for use with auto or manual focus lenses, while linear polarizers are best used with manual focus lenses.

Q: 9. Will this work with the Wooden Camera Zip Box Pro 4.5in Round Filter Stage?

A: Hi, this filter is compatible. with the Wooden Camera Zip Box Pro 4.5in Round Filter Stage.

Q: 10. What is the size of this filter?

A: Series 9 filters by Tiffen are a unique filter system once popular with older lens and camera design. Requiring a Series 9 adapter ring, this system allows you to use one standard size filter (Series 9) on many lens sizes. Series 9 filters, although screw-on style, require a bit more work to set up. The glass filter drops into the adapter ring and is held securely in place with the included retaining ring (adapter ring sold separately). Series 9 filters have no threads. Although these filters are no longer as popular as they used to be, they allow the use of filters for harder to fit lenses, a common problem with older camera lenses.

I still have Tiffen filters from my father's camera from the 1970's, they are that good. This polarizer is no exception. It is useful for taming reflections on water and controlling over-bright sunny skies, helping the blues look bluer.

I photograph vehicles most of the time and this product is great at reducing (if not removed) the glare or reflections in the photos.

CPLs were invented to adjust for AF problems in DSLRs. With the advent of mirrorless, those problems no longer exist.

For me (and others I know), the CPLs just didn't have the same effect on the image as the old linear polarizers had on film. Since I now shoot with a mirrorless body, I tried this linear polarizer, and it gives much better results. Richer blue skies, darker reflections. All around better.

Great filter for the price. Definitely helps bring out true colors in the sky and people. I use this all the time on bright sunny days to help with glare. Tiffen as always is amazing and it's nicely constructed and easy to use.

Like having linear polarizer alongside circular. Don't always want full polarization.
