Shorter and lighter than the NTG3 and with a flatter bass response, the Rode NTG5 moisture-resistant shotgun microphone lets you capture natural, uncolored sound indoors or outside for your next indie film, TV shoot, or documentary project without weighing down your rig.

Professional-level features such as ultralow-noise circuitry, a smooth off-axis response, and a tightly controlled low end make it ideal for a range of location recording scenarios. Plus, it includes a furry windshield and a pistol grip shockmount that can be attached to a boompole for increased versatility.

The NTG5's extremely high sensitivity allows it to produce robust output levels without having to apply extreme gain at your mic preamp. Sonically, the NTG5 delivers acoustic transparency due to its pioneering circular acoustic ports, gentle rise in high frequencies, and rumble-reducing attenuation of low bass frequencies. Its switch- and dial-free design lets you set up quickly and focus on the sound instead of fiddling with various mic settings. RF-bias technology and conformal coating ensure reliable performance even in severe conditions.

When your work takes you outdoors, you're bound to encounter humidity and condensation, which can cause many mics to fail. The NTG5's RF-bias technology and conformal coating provide excellent resistance to moisture, cold, and dust, allowing you to reliably capture high-quality audio in normal and adverse environmental conditions.

The NTG5 was engineered for transparency and all-weather performance. The combination of the NTG5's 8" long body, revolutionary circular acoustic ports, and supercardioid polar pattern yields focused on-axis directionality, smooth off-axis response, and a transparent tone with a tightly controlled low end. Its ultralow self-noise of 10 dBA and highly sensitive condenser element communicate detailed audio unburdened by the hiss that plagues many low-cost microphones.

Thanks to its 3-pin XLR output and compliance with 48 VDC phantom power, the NTG5 is compatible with a variety of handheld audio recorders, field recorders, and mixer adapters as well as built-in preamps on many camcorders and cinema cameras. The included short XLR cable—designed for use with the supplied pistol grip—features Neutrik and Switchcraft connectors and an integrated strain-relief junction box.

The NTG5 includes the PG2-R pistol grip shockmount, which impedes the transfer of vibrations to the microphone, and accommodates comfortable handheld operation or placement on a boompole. A mic clip is supplied in case you need to affix the NTG5 to a standard mic stand in a studio.

The NTG5 has a foam windscreen to reduce unwanted light wind noise from fans, heaters, and air conditioners. For maximum reduction of wind noise in indoor or outdoor environments, swap the windscreen for the included furry windshield.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can I get a good audio quality recording video with NTG5 in an iPhone (with adapter)?

A: An adapter between an iOS device and the NTG5 would not work because the NTG5 requires phantom power. So you would need to use an audio interface that can provide phantom power to the NTG5 and is compatible with iOS devices, like B&H # IKIRIGPREHD for example.

Q: 2. How this as a camera mounted mic on a Sony Fx9 for run and gun doc work.

A: Remove the included pistol grip shock mount and use the camera's microphone holder.

Q: 3. Only works with Phantom Power?

A: Yes, the Deity Microphones S-Mic 2S Shotgun Microphone operates using phantom power only.

Q: 4. What Blimp will work with shorter NTG5?

A: The Rode blimp. B&H # ROBLIMPR is the part number you can find it on the B&H website.

Q: 5. how can connect and attach the NTG5 to my camera and record directly on my camera?

A: If using a camera with XLR mic inputs that have phantom power, then all you need to do is plug the mic in via an XLR cable. If using a dslr with a 3.5mm input, then you would need an additional external mixer/ recorder to give you XLR mic inputs with phantom power. You would then plug the mic into this recorder and output a mini jack to the camera. Here's an example: B&H # TADR60DMKII.

Q: 6. Can anyone recommend a shockmount and windscreen for this microphone?

A: An excellent kit that provides a shock mount and outdoor windscreen would be the Rycote 18cm Standard Hole Classic-Softie with Lyre Mount & Pistol-Grip Kit, BH #RYSPGK18M. Another good option would be the Auray DUSM-1 Universal Shockmount for Camera Shoes and Boompoles, BH #AUDUSM1, combined with the Bubblebee Industries Windkiller Short Fur Slip-On Wind Protector for 18 to 24mm Mics (Extra-Large, Black), BH #BUBBIWKSXL. Both of these choices would work well with the Diety S-Mi C2S.

Q: 7. Will this mic diameter fit well on the mic holder that comes with the Fx6?

A: Although Sony does not specify the diameter of or compatibility for the microphone holder found on the FX6, the 0.75" diameter found on the Deity Microphones S-Mic 2S Moisture-Resistant Short Shotgun Microphone is relatively common and will likely fit nicely inside the FX6 microphone holder.

Q: 8. What's the difference between the NTG8 & the NTG3?

A: I have both microphones. My understanding is they have the same capsule. I use them outside with the Rycote Blimp system. The NTG8 picks up less wind sound( not distorted ) since it has a narrow pick up pattern as compared to the NTG3. There is more surface area with the NTG8 so the wind wants to move it physically. If you want to pick up a wider pickup pattern the NTG3 would do that. Both good microphones.

Q: 9. Can you recommend a mic stand adapter for this? Say's the diameter is .75"

A: You can use a shockmount like the Auray SHM-ESG Suspension Shockmount for Shotgun Microphones (B&H # AUSHMESG),the RODE SM4-R Suspension Shockmount (B&H # ROSM4R), the Airo by K-Tek ASM1 Shockmount 1 (B&H # AIASM1), or the Audio-Technica AT8415 Universal Shockmount (B&H # AUAT8415).

Q: 10. why would you choose the short version over regular?

A: A short shotgun microphone is good for use with compact cameras and often preferred for run-and-gun setups. A short shotgun microphone can pickup audio from several feet away and longer mics have the ability to pickup audio from a further distance. So if you were recording sounds that are further away, you would want to use the longer microphone.

This is an excellent mic. I use it primarily on camera (C200) but also 'handheld' with the supplied grip to capture extra sound bites. Clarity is superb and doesn't seem to exhibit the boosted bass, radio announcer, that other shotguns seem to have. The mic is really sensitive so output is higher than other mics in this category. Overall, I'd say it is a great choice especially considering what comes with the location kit.

Sounds very close to the sennheiser MKH 416 for voice overs.

Lightweight, simple, sounds great. Tonality holds up through most of its supercardioid pattern.

We are working on broadcasting and documentaries productions, therefore a good microphone is the key of our daily work.
Having used, in past sennheiser and other expansive and high quality microphones, we found the NTG 5 a great compromise between price and quality. I recommend this for film makers who are willing to increase the quality of their audio gear and not willing to spend higher budgets on a boom mic.

I love all of the accessories that come with this. The mic is very light, and produces the cleanest sound. Very sensitive. Works very well when paired with the Rode Blimp.

This mic sounds good in the environments for which I purchased it: vocals for both interior church and outdoor documentary-style work. It provides a high input signal, which allows me to keep the input on my C300 mark ii about the 3-4 level, whereas my other microphones sit about 5-6.

A few days ago, I wrote a review and thought I had received a lemon. It was a mistake. I have rectified my own mistake. I will buy and buy again and again. Best shotgun ever. I highly recommend this.

I did a lot of research before purchasing this mic and I am glad to say that I believe it was the right choice. The sound it captures sounds very authentic and full and the ability of it to block out sound from other directions is fantastic. I wish I had bought this sooner!
