I don't know what shape the microscopic bits of carbon dust are, but if they're spherical I imagine that would greatly reduce the risks of scratching. It's interesting how these were developed. Years ago, someone realized how well newspaper worked when cleaning windows. Whoever that was did some investigating and found that it was the carbon in the ink that made it so effective. With that, the idea for lens pens was born.
