Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does anyone know if these are fast enough for editing 2K footage off of?

A: The OWC Mercury Elite Pro USB 3.2 Gen 1 External Hard Drive has a maximum transfer speed of 252 MB/s, which would not be recommended for high-resolution video editing.

Q: 2. Can anyone advise me as to how to upload phots onto this ? I can't figure stout.

A: This drive is designed to be connected to a computer. Once it is connected to the computer and properly formatted you would use it as an external drive and then you'd be able to bring photos on to it with a camera that is connected to the same computer. You cannot bring photos directly to this drive.

Q: 3. Is this fast enough to edit video files from? If powered from USB-C, does it go to sleep randomly when rendering?

A: You could edit off of this drive but I wouldn't recommend it as the speeds are too slow to allow for smooth and responsive editing.

Q: 4. Is this compatible with a Mac?

A: Yes, this model is compatible with mac.

Q: 5. How do these drives compare to a similar model g-technology drive? I like that these drives have different connection types other than just Thunderbolt & USB-C

A: Thats what I bought these drive. Firewire etc. Hard to find these days

Q: 6. What brand of HDD do they use in this enclosure?

A: I believe it must be Seagate, as LaCie is touted as Seagate premium product.

Q: 7. SPECS says package weight is 3.635 ib. but Weight of drive is 0.13 ib /58 g. is that correct?

A: This was a web error and will be addressed by our web team shortly. Apologies for the mix up. This drive weighs 3.65 pounds.

Q: 8. I can’t seem to find a FireWire host connection. .??

A: The OWC 16TB Mercury Elite Pro External Hard Drive has 2 Firewire ports on the back of the drive.

Q: 9. Can these be stacked, or is heat an issue?

A: The vents on the OWC 8TB Mercury Elite Pro External Hard Drive are located on the sides, and not the top of the drive, so you could potentially stack them, but dues to the shape of the drive and the nature of rotating HDDs, I would not advise it.

Q: 10. I have several FireWire drives. I want to mount one at a time to this drive to transfer content. I would need to use the USB port to connect to my Mac Mini to make this transfer with Carbon Copy Cloner

A: It is not possible to mount a FireWire drive connected to the OWC 16TB Mercury Elite Pro External Hard Drive to a Mac over a USB host connection. In order to daisy chain a Firewire drive, you will need to connect the OWC Mercury Elite Pro to your Mac over Firewire.
