The Canon EF mount Laowa 12mm T2.9 Zero-D Cine Lens from Venus Optics provides a wide, 122° angle of view well suited for outdoor and landscape shots and in tight interior locations, and it is optimized for digital cinematography. It is so lightweight and compact that it can be used not only with handheld shooting, it is also light enough for use on gimbals. The lens produces an image circle that will cover full-frame, VistaVision, and ARRI ALEXA LF sized sensors or smaller.

The 12mm cine lens features a maximum aperture of T2.9 with 16 elements in 10 groups. Its 7-blade aperture provides a soft, pleasing bokeh, a shallow depth of field with little to no distortion, and a 7" close focus distance. The focus and aperture rings feature industry-standard 0.8 pitch gearing that will accommodate standard cine follow focus motors. The 102mm front diameter can be stepped up to 114mm with the included adapter to fit industry-standard matte boxes to prevent glare and reflection, as well as to add filters. Focus, aperture, and depth of field markings are in feet on the side of the lens to aid focus pullers.

In addition to the 114mm step-up adapter ring, a shim set is included for calibration, and a hard-shell Pelican case with custom foam is included to protect and transport the lens.

Q: 4. What is the front thread for NDs id like to screw on one if possible?

A: The Venus Optics Laowa 12mm T2.9 Zero-D Cine Lens (Canon EF) does not have front filter threads, and as such screw in filters are not compatible with the lens. With a 12mm format the Venus Optics Laowa 12mm T2.9 Zero-D Cine Lens (Canon EF) is likely to wide angle to pair with external ND filters, but if you want to try a matte box would be the best way to try an apply ND in front of the lens.

A: The Venus Optics Laowa 12mm T2.9 Zero-D Cine Lens (Leica L) is not as wide an angle as the IRIX 11mm T4.3 Cine Lens. It is however, lighter and tiny bit better in low light. Image quality wise, they are comparable.

A: The Venus Optics Laowa 12 mm T2.9 Zero-D Cine Lens (Canon EF) has a Canon EF mount, so the lens should have no issue working with the adapter listed below: Canon Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R with Variable ND Filter BH #CAMAEFRFDIND

Q: 10. Is it 12mm for 35mm FF sensor, or 17mm equivalent?

High image quality. Really impressed by it distortion control, can barely see any distortion. corners are sharp, well built. Very satisfied with it.

The lens lives up to its promise with zero distortion. One of the sharpest wide angle lens I have even used in both Nikon D810 and Sony A7R2. A very good adapter is needed for using in mirrorless cameras otherwise the corner sharpness will be affected by the imprecise dimensions of the adapter.

I am an architectural and interior photographer. This lens fills a price and quality niche that the big name companies have not addressed. Sure it is a completely mechanical lens, but coming from a view camera background this is not a problem for me. My only minor complaint(s) are...I would like Laowa to publish an unshifted lens profile for this optic and to have aperture markings on the opposite side of the lens, you could see when the lens is rotated 180 degrees. Otherwise a nice addition to my gear and I would not hesitate recommending this lens for professional use.

Surprisingly this super-wide lens does not have a fixed petal lens. This is presumably because there is a filter holder available and that necessitates removing the lens shade. Unfortunately, the shade will not tighten in place, on the lens, and starts revolving around the lens causing server vignetting. I have ruined my last two photoshoots because of this. I hate to glue it in place with a brand new $1000 lens. Apart for this issue, I love the lens and as far as I am concerned it has very minor distortion. Well worth buying - just be sure the shade is fixed better than mine.

My copy is sharp. Even the sides are very good -- better than what I get with the Canon 16-35 f4. Manual focus is rarely an issue at this focal length, and the depth-of-field scale on the barrel is accurate. The lens is solid and surprisingly compact. The Canon 11-24 is more versatile and probably sharper in the corners; but it's also 150% more expensive, and about twice the weight.

After waiting until others had bought and reviewed this lens, I got enough confidence to buy the Laowa 12mm and am loving it. Very sharp and the build feels sturdy, but remains a small lens due to having no electronic auto features. My main purpose was to shoot scenics, night skies and architectural, and would not be using auto-focus or auto-iris anyway. Only negative is that the filter holder has been on backorder for 3 weeks now!

Simply spectacular, very well built, completely metallic, and with a spectacular focus range, if I use diaphragm 8, for example, focus from 70cm to infinity approximately and I left for the last the best, zero distortion, wow, time saved In post production is important.

Love this ! Excellent picture quality and easy to work controls. A bit heavy due to metal barrel. Great for start pics.

I love it! Great for establishing shots. Amazing on a gimbal. Amazing for push in push out shots. Pans are where you see the image bend but as long as you keep that in mind when shooting it’s no big deal.
