The PL mount Laowa 12mm T2.9 Zero-D Cine Lens from Venus Optics provides a wide, 122° angle of view well suited for outdoor and landscape shots and in tight interior locations, and it is optimized for digital cinematography. It is so lightweight and compact that it can be used not only with handheld shooting, it is also light enough for use on gimbals. The lens produces an image circle that will cover full-frame, VistaVision, and ARRI ALEXA LF sized sensors or smaller.

The 12mm cine lens features a maximum aperture of T2.9 with 16 elements in 10 groups. Its 7-blade aperture provides a soft, pleasing bokeh, a shallow depth of field with little to no distortion, and a 7" close focus distance. The focus and aperture rings feature industry-standard 0.8 pitch gearing that will accommodate standard cine follow focus motors. The 102mm front diameter can be stepped up to 114mm with the included adapter to fit industry-standard matte boxes to prevent glare and reflection, as well as to add filters. Focus, aperture, and depth of field markings are in feet on the side of the lens to aid focus pullers.

In addition to the 114mm step-up adapter ring, a shim set is included for calibration, and a hard-shell Pelican case with custom foam is included to protect and transport the lens.

This unique lens is beautifully made, balances on my GFX-50r, sharp and rectilinear. For me, there was a learning curve, an enjoyable one at that.

There is no electronic connection. The focusing ring rotation is about 200º which makes critical focusing possible. It focuses amazingly close! I recommend opening up the aperture each time you focus, then close down. Of course, one shoots in A mode and you won't see the f-stop in the viewfinder. But the aperture has one-stop clicks which is easy to feel/hear.

When you're shooting for the cleanest perspective, it's best to engage the 3D leveling feature in the camera when hand-held -- I assigned a function button just for that (near the shutter).

Sharpness is very good wide open, superb from f/5.6 to f/16 in the center. Near the edge, it's quite good wide open, then excellent from f/5.6 to f/16. For me, f/22-32 are unusable.

And yes, composition! Many of us are used to seeing extreme wide angle in a different format, such as full frame (35mm) or 6x9cm in the old days. But this lens has an incredible wide angle both horizontally and vertically. So yes, there is a visual learning curve, for me anyhow!

Manual focus but easy to use. Worked well for me in Yosemite after the recent storm

This is a solid, well built lens (it's a little heavy) that produces sharp images. It does lack autofocus and weather-proofing however, it is significantly less expensive than comparable lenses that do offer those features. As I enjoy landscape photography from a tripod with wide angle views and huge depth of field, the fact that it is manual focus is not a problem. So, if that is your type of photography, get this lens, you will not regret it.

Great lens - great build quality and fantastic performance. Astonishing field of view and can get incredibly close to subjects; much more so than the official spec would suggest! My new favourite for creative medium-format work.

This laowa lens resolves very well on my GFX100 and it literally has no distortion at all. Being an architecture photographer, this lens is a GEM. Love how compact it is when compared to the Canon 17 TS. This will be my go-to lens for architecture job as well as landscape photography. Patiently waiting for the 100mm filter holder to release.

At the end of the day, I'd have been happy with a junk feel if it produced good images. This does that, but feels good to use as well. Good feel for the aperture ring, the focusing is nice and smooth, the DOF scale printed on the lens barrel is really nice. The metal construction feels really good in my hands, actually a nice change from Fuji's plastic lenses. Even though it adds a bunch of weight it still doesn't feel unwieldy. Close focus and infinity focus both looked great.

I love ultra wide lenses. This one is one of my favorite lenses along with Fujifilm 8-16mm Zoom on X system!
