The Manfrotto 046MC Expan Drive Set with Red Metal Chain allows easy raising and lowering of rolls of background paper without lowering the support stands. The system uses two expandable technopolymer inserts to support a single roll of seamless paper. Tightening each side expands the drive inserts from 1.8" to 3" to grip the roll solidly from the inside. One side has a large toothed gear to which a metal link chain affixes, permitting convenient raising and lowering of the background paper roll. The other side has an adjustable tension drag.

Q: 1. How wide a seamless paper backdrop roll can this support?

A: 9 1/2 foot roll of paper with no problem.

Q: 2. I own 2 of these. One of them the tension on the chain to unroll is very tight--I have to pull hard to bring the paper down. On my other one, the tension is so loose it doesn't want to stop unrolling. This makes me believe that there is a way to adjust the tension but I can't figure it out. To be clear, the entire roll and chain/gear/pulley keep unrolling, it's not just the paper tube not being tightly attached to the rods. How do you adjust?

A: On the drive end with the Impact logo, there is a knob behind that which will allow you to control the tension of the drive.

Q: 3. Is there a limit in length to the number of feet of background material that you can unwind and wind up?

A: 6ft out of original packaging but can be extended buy adding more links.

Q: 4. Is the chain guard included with this?

A: If you're referring to the guard that is a square shape surrounding the chain gear, yes that is included. It keeps the chain on and prevents any slippage. What you see in the picture is the two piece system that insert to the paper roll and slide into the holder/bracket slots.

A: The Manfrotto 046MCB Expan Drive Set with Black Metal Chain and the Manfrotto 046MC Expan Drive Set with Red Metal Chain are the same product, but they have a chain with a different color.

Q: 6. Looking to find the length of the chain (the looped/connected length, not the flat length).

A: The chain hangs down approximately 5.5 ft. from the center of the roller.

Works great in both of my studios holding a bright white and a green screen rolls. I was able to use the extender rod from Manfrotto to use the system in the studio where my holder had to be placed at 11.5 feet apart. 5

If you've used the cheaper plastic kit models from Impact or Studio Essentials and had the gears strip or drive break like so many of the reviews say, then spend the money and upgrade. These are durable and hold up to regular use! 5

These were great on a recent shoot where we had to swap background colours quickly and constantly over a two day shoot. The chain can be a little fussy and tangle, but it beats using a ladder and having lose paper rolls. Also can use just one side for smaller headshots on location if you don't want to use the chain or take clips to hold the paper. 5

Handling seamless rolls the old fashioned way may have contributed to my baldness;I pulled my hair out. No more wrestling with the rolls. Simply slide it onto the horizontal tube, pull it out, then, when ready to raise it, simple pull the chain! Couldn't be easier. 5 stars for Bogen! 5

I use three of these drive sets with Manfrotto Auto Poles and their background holder hooks. The item is easy to use and really quite self-explanatory. No directions are required. The product seems reasonably durable, and I'm anticipating it will last a long time. You really do need the Manfrotto background paper weights for the setup to work as easily as you want it to. It's just one more thing to buy, but well worth it. 5
