Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this come with a manufacturer warranty? If so, what does it cover and for how long?

A: Yes, the Glyph Technologies Blackbox PRO comes with a manufacturer's warranty which includes 3 years of hardware coverage, 2 years of level-1 data recovery, and 1 year of advanced replacement.

Q: 2. Can I use this drive with a USB C iPhone 15 Pro Max for photo storage?

A: While the Glyph Technologies 2TB Blackbox PRO 7200 rpm USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 External Hard Drive does have a USB-C cable to connect to the iPhone 15 Pro Max, I would use an external SSD instead to take advantage of faster transfer speeds. A great option would be (B&H #SAE612TB) as it is faster and pocket sized, making it easier to travel with.

Q: 3. will this work with RAID 5 for video editing?

A: A RAID 5 setup requires at least 3 disks. The Glyph Technologies 40TB Blackbox PRO RAID Desktop Drive (2 x 20TB, Thunderbolt 3), B&H # GLBBPR40RDT3, has 2 disks. You can still use it for video editing, but it can only work in RAID 0, 1, JBOD, and SPAN modes. If you are looking for a RAID 5 array, I would recommend looking into the Oyen Digital Fortis 5C 50TB 5-Bay External Drive Array with SoftRAID 8 Premium Kit, B&H # OY5FU3C50TV8, which does support RAID 5.

Q: 4. Can I Daisy Chain this with Glyph Technologies Blackbox PRO 8TB 2-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array with Hub

A: Yes, the Glyph Technologies 8TB Blackbox PRO 7200 rpm USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C External Hard Drive can be daisy chained through the Glyph Technologies Blackbox PRO 8TB 2-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array with Hub.

Q: 5. 1. Is it Solid State? 2. Is it bootable for editing? Thx

A: The Glyph Technologies 40TB Blackbox PRO RAID Desktop Drive BH #GLBBPR40RDT3 uses Enterprise grade HDD. Booting would depend on the capabilities of your motherboard.

Q: 6. What is the input voltage range for the transformer?

A: Glyph does not specify and disclose this information.

Q: 7. Will this drive work with original Thunderbolt connection?

A: I havn't found any adapter cable for it yet. But I'm sure it will come soon. It is still super fast read/write with USB.

Q: 8. Is this compatible with Windows 7?

A: Agreed

Q: 9. I asked if I can use this drive on my 2010 MAC Pro running Mountain Lion 10.8.5. You answered: "If you have a USB-C port, you can format this drive as needed for your OS." My old computer only has USB inputs, NOT the newer USB-C. Can this drive work with my old computer? Please let me know as I really need a hard drive for editing and backup THANKS SO MUCH! Micki

A: Yes, you could connect the Glyph Technologies 4TB Blackbox PRO 7200 rpm USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 External Hard Drive to your computer's USB-A ports with the included USB-C to USB-A cable. However, please keep in mind that the drive's speed would only go as fast as the USB version your computer has.

Q: 10. can i use thunderbolt connection ?

A: no thunderbolt.... this is new USB Type C

Good drive so far. Works like it's supposed too with my Mac Pro.
Loved that it was formatted for Mac. Worked quick, right out of the box.

Absolute best “ruggedized” external HDD in my limited experience. Much more substantial build than I am used to. Everything on it is top grade and nice looking. Glyph Tech warranty protection is impressive.

It comes in at 1340g or 2.95 pounds on a postal scale. As expected, there’s a generic 24W AC wall wart on a 120cm (3' 11) cord, with a noise choke.

Mine came with a 16TB SATA 6 Seagate EXOS X16 — a very nice, high-performing 3-1/2 HDD with low noise and notably low vibration. In a fan-less package like this one, they run pretty hot!

With no visible heat sink or fins, it does seem to shed heat quite well in normal use. If I planned on heavy video workloads in a warm environment, I’d aim an external fan at it.

The wraparound silicone bumper is thick and resilient, not spongey. It’ll soften a sharp shock. It will not soak up G-force from a fall or rough handling, so dropping this drive on the floor might not end well :-/

Handling: you obviously don’t move a spinning enterprise HDD around while it’s running. The package does not want to stand up on edge. It does seem to stay where you put it without creeping around. Stacks securely (don’t know as I’d want to). The bumper has herringbone lugs like a tractor tire, but it’s stretchy and not very grippy— you don’t carry this drive around in one hand.

Great drives that are well built in the US. Fast enough and reliable. Very satisfied. I’ve got four going for media backups.

I have purchased 4 Glyph HD. My first was 8TB and the last 3 are 16TB. My two earlier drives are still working. I love that the are USB C 3.2 Gen2, so data transfer is fast. I use one to store my image files and the other two are backup drives that are swapped out weekly, keeping one off site. They are quiet. I use them on a Windows system so had to reformat. Easy peasy. They just work.

I am using Glyph drives for the past 3 years. This year, I was surprised to see that there was a 12TB drive available.
So far, all of the 3 drives that I have, including this one, have been working well.
They do make noise (they’re not SSD), but it’s nothing to complain to about, as for the price+reliability they’re great.
I know some people might have different opinions about using the drives, but Ike with every piece of computational equipment, one need to take care of it.
Make sure to check for errors at least once every two weeks. And make sure to backup crucial files/projects.

Going back to Glyph itself, it’s great to see this company produce good hard drives. I’m thinking about buying another 12TB, as of this writing the price is great.

I bought two of these 20TB . I am using one to make a Time Machine backup of my Mac Pro Max Laptop and one to make a Carbon Copy clone of an external SSD where all my photos and HD videos are stored. I very pleased with the build quality of the drives and the speed doing the backups.

I have a zillion HDs and these are great. Will be buying many more. Speed is comparable to a 2x the price OWC I just bought.

Fantastic drive. Very fast. The usb-c cables they ship with it are no good. I thought these drives were garbage at first because they kept un mounting from my computer. But since replacing the USB-C cables with superfast, powerful cables, it has worked flawlessly.

I've never had a failure with Glyph. These just plug in and work...and they're solid.

I had 3 Glyph external hard drives. My first, a 500 GB finally died in 2020 after 10 years. By then I had purchased two 2 TB Glyphs and they been running for almost 10 years. They haven’t failed, but two years ago I started moving to the Samsung T7 SSD drives you see at the top of the stack. All this while I used slow 5400 backup drives for Time Machine backups of all my other drives. I’ve had a few of these cheap, popular drives but get not more than 2-3 years before they fail. So I now purchased this new Glyph BlackBox drive and hope it will last a long time as a backup. Glyph has a good reputation for being reliable. It’s a backup so if it fails, not all is lost. It is relatively quiet, much whiter than the other Glyphs in the stack. I like the rubbery casing. It is heavy.
