Tiffen 4 x 5.65" 4 Point/3mm Grid Star Effect Glass Filter create multiple points of light, or "stars," streaking outward from a central light source. This can make lighting within the scene take on a more glittering, glamorous appearance. This effect is produced by a series of thin lines etched into the flat optical surface of a clear filter.

The size and brightness of the star lines produced are first a function of the size, shape, and brightness of the light source.

You have additional control through the choice of a particular spacing between the lines on the filter; These spacings are measured in millimeters and range from 1mm to 4mm

A 1mm spacing has twice as many lines as a 2mm spacing; It will produce a brighter star for any given source

Lines in one direction produce a two-pointed star, just a streak through the center of the light

Tiffen offers 4, 6, and 8 point symmetrical star effects as well as additional asymmetrical star patterns through their exclusive Hollywood FX Series (North, Hyper, Vector and Hollywood star effects)

With an 8 point filter, the many star lines may tend to overpower the rest of the image, so use it carefully

Generally, mid-range apertures or larger are sufficient to achieve a good star effect; Always test before critical situations

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Hello, why does this filter seems to take two slots space when placed in the back slot of the Cokin P holder ? Only the front slot seems to be available when I put this filter. For example, CP + ND10 is possible but not CP + GND + ND10.

A: I just put the CP in the backmost slot, therefore taking up the very thin slot at back and one regular slot in front of it. Then I slid in both the dark gray and light gray filters into the two slots in front of the CP without any problem.

Q: 2. My Cokin P Series Holder accepts the Cokin P164 Circular Glass Filter, and I the 77m adapter ring fits as well. However, the filter does not turn easily and the adapter ring allows the holder to spin easily. What has anyone done to make these parts work as they should?

A: If the filter is truly hard to turn and you are still in 30 days from B&H, you should contact B&H Customer Service to see if you can exchange it. As far as dealing with the holder spinning, I would suggest trying spinning of the filter in the opposite direction, the direction use to tighten the 77mm adapter.

Q: 3. Will it work with Meade ETX 125

A: Yes it is compatible with the Meade ETX 125.

Q: 4. Can I use this filter (E43 Multi-Coated) on the Leica X (type 113)? Thanks.

A: If the X is a filter thread E43 than yes. I use it on an X-Vario. I love it. I am a firm beliver of using filters from the manufacturer of the lens.

A: The SmallRig Filter Tray for Star-Trail and Revo-Arcane Matte Boxes (4 x 4") is not a universal filter tray and it will not work in tray slots for 4 x 5.6 filter trays.

Q: 10. What factors are considerations in deciding between Canon 72mm UV Protector Lens ($34) verses Canon 72mm Circular Polarizing Lens ($159) for the lens I just purchased from you, Canon EF 85 mm f/1.2L USM (order no. 502379850). Thank you in advance.

A: A UV filter is basically a clear protection filter that works well for protecting your lens from scratches and smudges. A polarizing filter is helpful when shooting on bright sunny days as it reduces reflection and glare, and it also saturates the sky and gives your photos a nice rich and dark blue color.
