Sporting an especially sleek design, the Nikon Z50 is a DX-format mirrorless digital camera revolving around the versatile Z Mount. Capable in both stills and video realms, the Z50 features a 20.9MP CMOS sensor and EXPEED 6 image processor, which enables fast performance up to 11 fps, a reliable 209-point hybrid AF system with eye detection, and notable low-light performance to ISO 51200. For video shooters, UHD 4K is supported up to 30 fps along with Full HD recording at up to 120 fps for slow-motion playback. For fine-tuning your photos and videos, in-camera clip trimming can be used, and 20 Creative Picture Controls and 10 Special Effects settings help to infuse your imagery with a unique look.

The body design is impressively sleek yet still ergonomic to benefit all-day-long shooting. A high-resolution 2.36m-dot OLED EVF benefits working in bright conditions with clear eye-level viewing and the 3.2" rear touchscreen LCD has a 180° flip-down design that is perfect for selfies. The magnesium alloy body is weather-sealed, too, to suit working in inclement conditions. Additionally, for easy sharing, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth work in conjunction with the Nikon SnapBridge app for wirelessly transferring photos and videos and remotely controlling the camera from your mobile device.

The DX-format 20.9MP CMOS sensor is paired with the EXPEED 6 image processor to provide a versatile mixture of high sensitivity, nuanced image quality, and fast overall performance. At native values, a sensitivity range from ISO 100-51200 permits working in a broad array of lighting conditions, and can be further expanded up to ISO 204800 for extreme low-light conditions. The mixture of resolution and sensor size also contributes to clean image quality and smooth color transitions with reduced noise throughout the sensitivity range. In addition to benefitting image quality, the EXPEED 6 processor also affords a wealth of speed throughout the camera system, including a top full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 11 fps as well as 30 fps shooting at 8MP.

Besides imaging, the sensor's design also incorporates a 209-point hybrid autofocus system, which uses both phase-detection and contrast-detection methods to quickly and accurately acquire focus for both stills and video applications. This focusing system also supports Eye Detection AF, which uses facial recognition to help lock focus onto subjects' eyes.

Capable of recording more than just stills, the Z50 supports UHD 4K video recording at up to 30 fps and Full HD recording at up to 120 fps, for slow-motion effects, along with the ability to save movie files to the in-camera memory cards or to an optional external recorder via HDMI out. In-camera time-lapse shooting is also possible with the ability to produce a finished UHD 4K video file directly from the camera.

  • A large 3.2" 1.04m-dot LCD screen is available for bright, clear, and vivid image playback and live view shooting. The screen has a 180° flip-under tilting design, which benefits front-facing selfie captures, and it is also a touchscreen for more intuitive operation, navigation, and settings control.

  • A 3.6m-dot electronic finder is present for comfortable eye-level viewing. It has a 1.02x magnification and uses NIKKOR optics to guarantee a sharp, clear image.

  • Single SD memory card slots supports up to the UHS-I protocol for quickly storing photo and video files.

  • A robust magnesium alloy chassis is both dust- and weather-resistant to benefit working in harsh climates and inclement conditions.

  • Built-in SnapBridge connectivity to enable seamless transfer of low-resolution imagery as well as remote shooting capabilities. BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) and Wi-Fi enables communication between the camera and a smart device and, additionally, the mobile device can remotely trigger the shutter and display a live view image from the camera to enable working from a distance.

  • Included EN-EL25 rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 300 shots per charge, and in-camera charging is supported when using the optional EH-73P charging AC adapter.

  • Multiple Exposure mode lets you combine several exposures into one frame for creative effects.

  • Special Effects Modes: Night Vision; Super Vivid, Pop, Photo Illustration, Toy Camera Effect, Miniature Effect, Selective Color, Silhouette, High Key, and Low Key.

  • Creative Picture Controls: Dream, Morning, Pop, Sunday, Somber, Dramatic, Silence, Bleached, Melancholic, Pure, Denim, Toy, Sepia, Blue, Red, Pink, Charcoal, Graphite, Binary, and Carbon.

  • In-Camera Image Editing: Distortion Control, D-Lighting, Image Overlay, NEF (RAW) Processing, Perspective Control, Quick Retouch, Red-eye Correction, Resize, Side-by-Side Comparison, Straighten, Trim, and Trim Movie.

  • Language Support: Arabic, Bengali, Bulgarian, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Marathi, Norwegian, Persian, Polish, Portuguese (Portugal and Brazil), Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Swedish, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese.

A: At this time, Nikon has no plans for a Z50 grip but that may change in the future.

Q: 2. I want to take multiple long exposures with greater than 30 sec using an external intervelometer. Since there is no DC2 port on Z50, how can this be done?

After decades of shooting with MFT (Panasonic G85) I wanted to try a camera with APC-s sensor that comes in lightweight shape. Z-50 is an awesome camera.
One quip: camera's strap that comes with camera and carries a NIKON name on it is a SHAME to the brand

I have several Nikon cameras & lots of lenses - This is the most fun, light, easy to use, and small enough to slip in your coat pocket (with 16-50mm lens)camera Nikon makes. I was VERY impressed with the picture quality and the video pictures. If you want a nice, easy to operate camera for a vacation trip without packing the car with lots of lens and camera body's - This little guy is the choice you should make.

I typically keep my D500 permanently connected to the 200-500mm for wildlife, and I wanted a small portable camera that had excellent manual controls that I can carry easily and shoot high quality photos and 4K videos of people with, that are normally shot with a cell phone. The kit 16-50mm lens is tiny and with it attached the camera is almost as easy to carry anywhere as the older nikon 1 j4 camera, while having more familiar controls, a better grip, and much better image and video quality.

This is like a bigger version of the Nikon 1 J5 which really love using but this Z50 has a lot more features. Kudos to the Nikon Team of experts. Go go go!

It’s got so much going for it

It’s light, small, comfortable to carry and to handle, extremely intuitive and ergonomic.
Once setup with BBF, it is actually more convenient to use than my similarly setup DSLRs.
High ISO is surprisingly good; but don’t expect to be able to take quality indoor Futsol photos at highest auto settings
Auto Focus works very well, and quickly.
It offers adaptability and functionality for inexperienced as well as experienced photographers.
Color accuracy is excellent
With the adaptor, I can use my other Nikon lenses (although, as advertised, some lose auto-focus capability).
Shooting in RAW provides more than adequate size files.
Being able to see exactly what you will get in the view finder, or on the screen, is reason enough to own this mirror-less camera
The kit lenses, while not fast, are adequate for most purposes, and provide good zoom range.
It is great fun to use.
Did I mention it is great fun to use.
It seems like a bargain to me for what it provides as a kit.
One may quibble about the battery capacity, or the pivoting screen that can get in the way for tripod use, or some missing professional capability. Get over it. Nikon is clearly trying to appeal to a very broad audience; and is largely successful. Nothing is perfect.
I’ve yet to use the movie capability or the blue tooth connectivity. To be honest, I do not care about either and will assume from the tech specification that the former, at least, is good. I have no idea how it compares to the competition; but then it enables me to stay in the Nikon family

I already own a Z6 & D750 that I use for Astrophotography, but I wanted something smaller and lighter for an EU vacation I'm taking in December; I'm limited on baggage. This camera takes amazing pictures and I don't need a separate camera bag. Bottom line, very small, very light, but feature rich although a lot of my shots will probably be Auto. Trying to enjoy the vacation and not spend too much time behind the camera.

This camera is amazing! I bought it as a lighter alternative to my d810 and also to sample the mirrorless world. I’m extremely impressed needless to say! The raw images come very close to and even surpass my d810 at times. The video capability is leagues ahead. Plain and simple, if you are considering this camera, Just do yourself a favor and buy it.

Nobody is paying attention to this little camera because it does not have the pro specs, it's not dual card slot, it's only 20.9 MP, it's a huge mount with a small sensor, full-frame is better than APS-C, the lens selections are not good, blah...blah..blah... Everyone is missing out the intention Nikon has on this camera and that is the FUN factor in photography. I have and used Nikon D7100, D810, D850, D500, and the Z7. All of them are really grate cameras. Well constructed, weather sealed, rugged, and most of all aimed for professional use. I also have a bunch of Nikon lenses that you can say are also pro grade. When Nikon first announced this camera I was not really thrilled like the way I was when they debuted the D850 and Z6/7. And like everyone before investing on a new equipment I do research first before committing. When it became available for pre-order I went ahead and took the dive of getting one. Now that I tried it I was amazed with how compact this camera is. It literally a pocketable camera like its point and shoot cousins. The capabilities in stills and video is on par with my D500 except of the size, additional features, and weight. I take this camera with me most of the time than my other ones. It's fun to shoot it. IMO it's a better alternative than using my smartphone for taking photo at least the shape is familiar for me with that DSLR/Mirrorless feeling in your hand. The size makes good use for candid and street photography because it's less noticeable and discrete. It's a well rounded camera for taking almost any kind of photography. The 20.9MP is just within the sweet spot for resolution good enough for a 13 x 19 size print out. I do not pixel peep or even scrutinize the resolution like Youtuber reviewers do because at the end of the day what matters most it your overall satisfaction with the product since you are the user.
