However, if you prefer to control each function of each fixture separately then you will need one channel per function per fixture. For example, if you have three fixtures with five functions then you would need 15 channels to control each of the fixtures' individual functions separately (3 fixtures X 5 functions = 15 channels). Of course, fixtures are often controlled in groups and in such a case they would be set to the same channel. So, if those five fixtures are instead to be controlled together as a group to do the same thing (e.g. to dim at the same time, to strobe at the same rate, and to move in the same direction) then you can set them to the same channel as each other. That only takes up three channels regardless of the number of fixtures (1 set of however many grouped fixtures x 3 functions = 3). This is true for DMX control in general with all DMX control boards, not just with the CHAUVET DJ Obey 40 DMX Controller (B&H# CHOBEY40).
